Buckeye Breed Discussion!

Im sorry for butting in, but do Buckeyes have another name? Im in the UK and have never heard of them. They look very similar to our Rhodies..... :/
Edit* just had a quick google, and they are a breed of their own. Possibly originating in Ohio... :)
Yup. They are very difficult to find. They were classed as threatened. There is only 1 breeder where I live. Evidently there are different standards. The Canadian Buckeye is slightly different than the American buckeye. Evidently western Canada buckeyes are even slightly different than eastern Canada. The breeder I got my 2 from just came from a national show in Ontario and discovered that while she was showing there.
They look a lot like RIR because that's one of the original breeds used to start the breed.

You got it, Dawn. The chief difference between BE and RIR is that the BE has a pea comb. Hatchery BE also maintain AFAIK the lovely mahogany color, and the calm temperament of the old fashioned heritage RIR. Current RIR, IMO are a watered down version of what they used to be. Hatchery RIR are often a production breed, don't have the dark color, and are as mean as snakes.

My 3 hatchery hens are very sweet.
One of the reasons I got rid of the leghorns is because they bullied the buckeyes badly. 2 of the girls looked like they'd been jumped by a dozen roos. The lost their feathers on their backs, head and most of their fluff.
