Hi Kudzu, welcome to the buckeye thread. Where in north Mississippi? I live about an hour's drive from Greenville and 2 hours from Helena in south east Arkansas.

I'm surprised at how distinctive the Buckeyes are in personality. We've raised a few generations of bantam buff brahmas, which are nice birds, don't mind being held or handled, and are moderately curious, and can take or leave roosting.

The young Buckeyes are in-your-face curious, always wanting to know what we are up to. They love to roost. At the moment, they are arguing over who gets to roost on the waterer. When I open the door to their cage, one always hops out at me - not to get away, just to see what I'm up to and get a better look at the world. They like to sit on my arm while I'm trying to add water or food. However, the moment I try to hold one, squawk squawk squawk! They want to be out, and with me, but on their terms rather than mine. They are very self-assured.

Interestingly, they seem to be the latest to completely feather of this group, but the first to develop combs. The Brahma born the same week has had full feathering for a couple of weeks, but the buckeyes are just getting the last of their head feathers.

Hmm. For some reason I haven't been getting notices of messages in this thread, sorry about that folks! Life's been crazy around here with DD#1 graduating from HS last week, in-laws here from Canada, and all the related activities.

I've shut down my incubator and hatcher for the spring, won't hatch again until fall. Odd not to hear the humming of the fans...

Interesting observations and fun to read. My buckeyes are just over 2 weeks old. It is fun to watch their personality develop....mine are quite talkative. So much so we're glad to have them in an outdoor brooder now!

My Buckeye chicks are about 3 1/2 weeks old and they are in an outside brooder, in a big dog crate in the big chicken pen. As soon as we open up the crate door to fill up their waterer and feed dishes, they all come running out, like they are glad to see me. Most let me pick them up, but then want down. They are very curious and sometimes get to close to an adult who will peck at them (they run pretty fast back to the brooder). Silly birds.

I get up at 4:00 am for work and with the house windows open, I can hear them chirping away. The first time I heard that, I ran out there thinking they might be cold or hungry. Nope, just going about their business.

I kinda, sorta hurt one of the chicks toe on Sunday. I felt so bad. I pinched it under the crate when I was moving it to clean under the brooder. I cleaned out the scraped toe, and put antibiotic ointment and a bandaid on it. As soon as I put it back in the brooder, it picked off the bandaid. Oh well, I keep cleaning it out and putting a bandaid on it, it is healing nicely.

Love these Buckeyes!

Angie

I love this quote!!!

I'm glad. I found it while facing a serious illness and it stuck with me. It seems to fit with BYC also, and how helpful and courageous people are when it comes to chickens.

I see on the auction that Matt John at Shady Lane has some buckeye chicks for sale in Indiana. Laura wasn't he one that got some of your stock after a flood or something?

Yes. But, I got my original birds from him! So they're his bloodline too, originally from John Brown of Ohio. When he had the big flood, he brought me about 300+ eggs to hatch for him, which was what he used to restart many of his breeds (he lost about 70% of his flock.) As well, I gave him every Buckeye egg I had, and a bunch of chicks too, to get him back up and running. He also has some of my Dutch (which I am getting out of.)

So the Buckeyes he has are his, and mine, together.
