Buckeye Breed Thread

Mine are spending a lot of time in the raspberries, shady with bare cool damp ground. And the adult Ameraucana rooster cannot get in there to enforce discipline on these kazoo-crowing teenage Buckeyes.

Mine were hatched around Easter from JamesA eggs. When can I expect the pullet to start laying? Should I be looking for eggs in the raspberry patch?

Hi Everyone,

My Buckeye chicks are getting big. I think I can tell some of the roosters because their combs are getting reddish. I've never had chickens with pea combs, so I'm just guessing here.

One of my darling Buckeyes pecked me in the eye yesterday. I was bent over looking at one of our newly hatched chicks and before I knew it, one of the chicks jumped up and pecked my eye. It is a little sore and red today, but I am watching for any kind of infection.

I hope everyone is doing good!

Angie

Yep, they love anything shiny!

I've got such a large spread in the ages of my buckeyes, I can't remember how old they are without looking it up. From cockerels looking at the freezer to new hatched chicks and everything in between. Somewhere in that group are my show birds, I just have to figure out which ones they are.

I know what you mean. I will be downsizing my flock, but I want to be sure I keep the better ones. My DS shows in poultry shows and the fair. I have not ever seen any Buckeyes in any of the shows out here, so it will be interesting this year.

Finally my CGM strain buckeyes have started to lay. I am getting about 4 eggs a day from 9 girls. I have them with two differnt roos, one has 4 ladies and the other 5. I also have one BE roo with 2 blrw that have just started to lay. I dont have a blrw roo but am thinking about hatching a few of there eggs just to see what the chicks will look like. I am pretty sure not all of the ladies are laying yet, but it shouldnt be much longer. As soon as the egg size stabilizes I intend to hatch just about all they lay between now and mid Sept. I will be keeping most of the pullets and a few roos. I should have several POL birds for sale by next spring.

My biggest concern right now is they dont want to go on the roost. They prefer to sleep outside the coop and on the ground. Their pens are well constructed to keep predators out, but I worry about this winter. The entire run has a metal roof to keep them dry, but I may endup haveing to lock them up in the coop to keep them out of the wind.

Mine hatched 2/12/10 and they have not started laying yet. The Jersey Giant/cross same age are laying. The Buckeye's look like they are ready to lay and I may have got a egg from one of them a couple of weeks ago but thats it. Maybe the heat has something to do with it.

After it cools off a little, go out at night and throw everybody in the coop and lock them in for a couple of weeks. That might get them to going to bed where they should.

AHHH! Finally!

Today I went to the Ohio State Fair and saw Buckeyes for the first time! Until now I have only seen pictures.

After finally laying my eyes on several I have confirmed I will definitely be getting Buckeyes! There was a pullet there who was such a beautiful rich mahogany. I do not know about showing, but the card on the cage had a "1" circled on it. Does that mean she won First for Buckeye pullets in the Open Class (that was on the card, too)? Also, the rooster that had a "1" circled on his card, was truly a magnificent looking roo. Very bold and proud.
