Buckeye Breed Thread

This spring I purchased 12 Buckeye chicks from Brad Judge in Ann Arbor, MI for $3.50 each and ordered 12 Black Copper Marans from Paul at Green Fire Farms for $12.50 each. I "thought" I would LOVE the Marans and the Buckeyes were a afterthought. Well I was so wrong! The Buckeye are so much more personable. They follow everyone around and are so curious. The Marans are skittish and aren't friendly at all. A few are such poor quality they look ridiculous. I wish I'd saved my money.

I think the Blue Marans are just beautiful. And I am rethinking the Buckeyes. Mine are close to point of lay, and I'm just not feeling an attraction to them. I will keep them awhile longer, just to see how things go.

By the way, it's Marans (with an S when singular or plural).

Hey everybody, they finished the barn this week, I'm calling it my "show barn" (sounds all sophisticated, doesn't it) It will house my breeding pens for my Buckeyes, Japanese Banties, brooders, broodies, and maybe even have an incubator room. Now I have to get the fill dirt in (he was supposed to be here before they put the structure up! Then the fun/hard part of figuring out how to build what I want with all that concrete and steel in the way. There will be outside runs connected to the barn pens. Jen, that chicken barn is awesome and I am going to copy you when I move to more land. That is exactly what I need.

So how are everyones chickens doing in the heat? It is supposed to be 95* today with a heat index of 101 - 105. I am so worried about my chickens. Usually I have the kids go out and mist them 2-3 times a day but my son is at band camp and my daughter is with with her cousins going to the pool today. I almost decided to work from home so I could keep an eye on everyone. We also have rabbits but they seem to be ok so far.

I have been very happy with how well the Buckeyes seem to handle the extreme weather. They were great in 20 inches of snow with -20* temps and now seem to be fine in 95* temps with 90% humidity. I can't wait for fall...
