I hatched out 4 back in December from Laura's eggs. I got 1 cockerel and 3 pullets from that hatch. The boy looks really good except for 1 crooked toe. The girls look good to.

Boy or girl?

We have three Buckeyes hatched April 22. One is very definitely a male, one is much smaller and definitely a female. The middle one (my favorite, definitely the most interesting and interested) is in between in size, comb, etc. I am thinking that she's a female but still not certain. She has more comb than the definite female, but not nearly so much as the obvious male. Feather development is looking more like the obvious female than the male.

For the long run, we'll see how it turns out, but we have an entry for a buckeye pullet this week at the county fair. If Middle is a pullet, she's definitely the better one, so that's the one we're planning on. But, no fun to be DQ'd for being in the wrong gender. What say you? If she's entered as a girl will she be a DQ?

The front one is Middle. You can see the male in the background on the left and the other female in the back on the right peeking out from behind the Wyandotte.

More of a front view of the comb.

I can snap more pictures of her or of the others as needed.

No offence, But I would not show him........anywhere near Arkansas! PLEASE!!!!!!!

We have enough great looking Buckeyes in Arkansas, Jen made sure of it!

I havent found any shows close to me yet and have never even been to one. I am considering going to the Nationals in Ohio this year as a spectator. The Roo in the Pic is a son of The McCary roos from last years show. I have two other roos and 9 just started pullets of the same bloodline. I had two seperate hatches, one in Jan and the other in Feb 2010. I will be fireing my bators back up in a couple of wks as soon as egg size stabilizes. So far every egg i have checked looks to be fertile so I am looking forward to some good hatches.

Muddstopper,

By all means take them all to Ohio and show them. You win Grand Champion of the show.....

just please keep them away from Arkansas!

Seriously, search for the Poultry Press. Then subscribe. They have shows listed in every state. Contact your NPIP state office. They will know who is ahving a poultry show. Call the APA. Pat can tell you who in NC is having a sanctioned show.

More pix on my dilemma... precocious pullet or laggard cockerel? We have to check them in for the fair this evening.

I've been watching closely and I'm leaning pullet, but I'm not sure about that tail.

These three came from Duane Urch. (Actually, the Wyandotte did also.)

It looks like a pullet to me. What about hackle feathers? Do they look like the cockerels or the pullets. If they are pointed then it is a cockerel, if they are rounded then pullet. Someone else may chime in with more info.

Ah, I didn't think to look there. I think rounded.

Well, they're all settled in. And right next to a slightly older pair of Rhode Island Reds. I hope the judge either gets a reference for what they're supposed to be or just knows, and won't be thinking, wow, these are goofy looking RIRs.

My daughter made a nice sign for them for the public after the judging mentioning their rarity and some of their more interesting traits. So even though they're still young for the part and probably won't pick up any placings, they'll be there getting people thinking about mouse-eating chickens.
