There are lots of Buckeye breeders in OH and northern KY (like me!)

You can contact the American Buckeye Poultry Club (of which I am the secretary/treasurer) for a list of folks in your area. Email me at info AT americanbuckeyepoultryclub DOT com (replacing the AT with an @ symbol and the DOT with a . symbol.)

We'll get you set up, never fear!

The beak will grow back but it takes a long time. I had one of my roosters lose most of his top beak in January, and it is about 1/2 grown back.
So, he wouldn't be able to show this year, but maybe next.

Good luck!

Laura, thanks for the info. I thought you said you didn't sell them as Buckeyes. I will do the same, I will just advertise them as layers and will tell them the breed if pressed. Thanks all, I guess I need some more pens...

Yep. Any cull birds I have I sell as "just chickens." When I had Dutch and sold culls, I did so just as "backyard banties" to folks who wanted something cute to run around their yard.

posting from phone...yuck. On the way home from illinois show. Went with daughter to pick up her faverolles (yes, that's 750 miles). Of course, I couldn't come home empty handed....two gamble quail hens (anybody got a male?) and two pair of buckeye bantams! And some wire cages just because. If we bought anything else we would have had to strap the kids to the roof with the cages. We are talking about how to build a trailer topper to travel to shows together. I do believe she has caught the bug.

sekinkead wrote:So I am getting ready to make my cull selections to get the numbers down for winter. I have several questions I would like some advice on. First what do you guys do with extra girls? I have at least 2 that I don't want to use in my breeding plan and possibly more. One is way too light, she is more of a brown and the other has a lot of green in her hackle feathers. The other thing I need advice on is roosters. This is what I have:
My main flock rooster, Brutus, that I got from Chris at the Ohio National
1 cockerel that I hatched from Laura's eggs
3 cockerels that I hatched from JamesA's eggs
4 cockerels that I hatched from Brutus and the 1 hen I got from Jay at the Ohio National.

My questions are how many do I keep? I looked them all over on Monday and spent about an hour feeling them, breast size and fullnes, heart girth, ect. I have a few with 1 crooked toe and some I know I don't want to keep as they are scrawney compared to the others. I have one that is nice and square but his legs seem a little short. I will take pictures of all the boys (if I can) and post so you can give me opinions that way as well.

I do have the APA standard of perfection, the black and white version and will use that to help me choose but I am just trying to find out what seems to work best for all of you. I currently have them in 2 coops and would like to get them down to 1 coop as we want to add Deleware's and those will be our two breeds to concentrate on.

I am perfectly fine with eating any culls which is what I plan on doing with the cockerels as long as no one expresses an interest in them, but I hate to do that with the pullets as they could still be good layers.

Sorry to ramble, I will stop and let people respond now.

For genetic diversity, you should definitely keep the one cockerel hatched from Laura's eggs as that is a different line and at least one of your Brutus X Jay's hen (as that cross is going to be something nobody else has at this time)--- I'd be interested in a cockerel from you next year when you breed a pullet from this cross back to Brutus. The cockerels from JamesA are solely from my line (so same line as Brutus) and then your Brutus X Jay's hen is going to represent something else entirely (a crossing of two lines).

Things happen to cockerels and it is always good to keep an extra above the plan. You should keep 3-4 of the 8 if you can as follows: 1- Laura's; 1 JamesA and perhaps 2 of your Brutus X Jay's.
