I got my little Princess from Ideal (well, the person I got her from got her from Ideal, anyway); and at least according to the comments I've gotten on this thread (see earlier posts, and photos), she's a "true" buckeye. Pea comb, chestnut-red plumage, yellow legs, kinda square - I suppose there's no way to know for sure without a genetics test, but she sure *looks* like a buckeye!

If you wanted some a lot nicer there are a lot of really good buckeye breeders that will sell you chicks or hatching eggs.Chicks would be in the spring if you could wait.Me or Laura or even others could help you out.I think in the long run you would be happier.

Even though I'm perfectly happy with my Ideal hen, I would also advocate for getting birds from a breeder rather than from a hatchery. Quite aside form the genetics/quality issues, I get a little queasy when I force myself to consider the realities of large hatchery operations... if I had it to do again I would get my birds from breeders. And with so many folks on this thread so willing to help each other out, you might as well aim for chicks from one of these nice folks!

i think im going to get some from a hatchery then order some eggs from a breeder and do both because i looked at one of those online breeder directory things and it doesnt look like there is a whole lot of genetic diversity... is that correct? b/c if so i would like a blend of the two for gene diversity purposes

If I'm not mistaken, David Puthoff (BuckeyeDave) has done just that, combining several lines. He has great customer service. You will have to work with your breeding a little, but the potential is there. I got both eggs and chicks from him and have been pleased. If you want to start with show quality chickens, then buy from a show line. Many times when you cross lines, strange stuff pops up, even when both lines are superior stock.

It is OK to cross LINES as long as they are of the same STRAIN. Like I said in an earlier post on this thread: "There is always confusion about what is a line and what is a strain. A STRAIN is a population of birds being bred in more than one location by more than one steward. Each steward may have his own LINE of the strain, after about three years of making selection decisions, but the whole of the population is still the one STRAIN."

I have my own LINE as I am a STEWARD for more than 3 generations of Urch and ALBC STRAIN Buckeyes. See the distinction.

The Buckeye Strains would be:

URCH
ALBC (new strain created using Urch, Brown & Rhodes strains)
BROWN
RHODES
MEAN-AS-SNAKES

However, notice that the ALBC STRAIN, you could likely & successfully cross to Urch, Brown or Rhodes & not have any trouble-- definitely Urch and Brown (look at Laura's birds-- ALBC & Brown) OR (my own-- ALBC & Urch). The Buckeye gene pool isn't very large. Most have their origins in the Urch strain.

More on strains and lines at a date in the near future as we are still gathering information.
