Buckeye Breed Thread

Okay you Buckeye nuts (pun intended!!).... I have jumped on the bandwagon. I have a mixed flock of about 25 birds right now and picked up a copy of Backyard Poultry Mag while on our way to ..... OHIO for Christmas and discovered the breed through the article! I had heard of them since I spend way too much time reading threads on this website, but since I just started with chickens last spring, I was anxious just to have whatever came my way - I wasn't picky last year. So now that it's going to be spring soon (I know it will - even with this bitter cold right now!), and we have since moved where I built an even bigger and better coop (don't tell my DH but with room to expand!!), I'm ready for more of these danged two-legged feathered addictions!

I am very interested in continuing a rare breed, especially one from Ohio (my home state) and even more especially one started by a woman! So.... question for you folks who are in the know: Sandhill is very close to me (5 mi or so) - would it be best to go through them to start with this breed, or go through a breeder? As my folks are still in Ohio (just west of Dayton on I-70), it's also feasible to meet up with breeders out that way - or anywhere in between!!

Thanks, she is a curious thing and I love her to death. She's the only Buckeye I have and she will have a home with me whether she lays eggs or not.Ruby has a great personality and that's enough for me.

Honestly, if I lived five miles away from Sandhill, and could get them to sell me chicks this year, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. Now, they may have a waiting list, so you'll have to contact them.

Otherwise, there are lots of folks on the list here who sell hatching eggs, chicks, and started birds (myself included.) I am in northern KY, and DH works in Cincinnati, about an hour south of Dayton. Dave Puthoff is right up around Dayton too. I'm sure we can get you some birds. But start with Sandhill and see where that goes, is what I would advise.

Hi Victory,

Lots of folks here hatch and ship chicks, myself included. You can see my website here: http://www.pathfindersfarm.com

As well, Dave Puthoff ships chicks (he's the webmaster for the American Buckeye Poultry Club, I'm the Secretary/Treasurer), you can see his website here: http://www.buckeyechickens.com

I'm sure more folks will chime in here as well.

Cheers,

WOW! Thanks so much I will be getting back with you in a few weeks to place my order! My husband is going to be very excited thanks!

How far is too far to ship eggs? I would hate to order eggs and them not be handled well threw the mail? I have no experience with this so not sure how well that works!!

Two things: if you wish to order chicks, please email me now to get on my waiting list. And shipping hatching eggs works pretty well, I have mailed some as far as Oregon and Utah with pretty good results, especially given the time of year and temperatures.

I will sure get pics up as soon as I can get them out of the bator! I don't dare open it up yet, I have 5 more eggs in there and 2 have pips!
