I think I promised y'all an update once the chicks hatched - or not. Well, I'm very happy to report that all six fertile eggs hatched.
Moreover, I don't know if I mentioned this before or not but I pulled a real boneheaded move early on with the incubation. My wife decided she didn't want the incubator in the house as I had it all last year. We were separated at the time and she recently moved back in so to keep the peace I agreed to move it out to the porch. Well, the temp dropped a couple of days and after two days of fiddling with the switches on my Sportsman 1502, I decided to bring the thing back in the house. One night the outside temp dropped down into the 40's and inside the incubator it dropped to 95 or so. Thankfully, I didn't get too much resistance from the wife.
Anyways, this temp fluctuation all occurred the first two days the eggs were cooking in the incubator. After I brought them in the house it stayed a constant 100% (or probably 99.9 like it's supposed to) without any problems.
Perhaps a note to the men on here would be good to insert here. When operating equipment, it is beneficial to read the Instruction Manual before operation. The IM that comes with the Sportsman says right in it to keep the incubator in a place where the temp stays between 65-70% and to NEVER have it someplace where the temp drops below 50 degrees! Like duh!
In closing, I should tell you that I did help one of the Buckeyes out of its shell although I may have acted prematurely. After like 12 hours of seeing it pip and seemingly not make any progress, I opened the shell up a bit just enough that it could still struggle and break free. I wasn't sure if I'd get any others and I just didn't want to go without any at all. Btw, they eggs all hatched a full 2 days late. They should've hatched late Friday but the first didn't actually hatch until Saturday and the rest finished up late on Sunday.
Anyways, they all seem to be doing just fine now. I'm a happy camper!
God Bless,
