Buckeye Breed Thread

Skyedobb, I did about the same thing and started with Red stars and a lot of others. Then I figured since it was really just a hobby, I didn't have to have the best layers around, and it might be nice to help out a heritage breed. And, being a woman from Ohio, The Buckeye was the natural choice. So I sold my Laying flock just as it was really kicking in gear, and started over with buckeyes. I certainly haven't been disappointed. Sorry I can't help about the sandhill birds, no experience there. Good luck and welcome on board.

Skyedobb: Sandhill is a very good place to get your Buckeye chicks. You are lucky to be so close to them. Sandhill's stock came from Duane Urch (Minnesota) and is good stock. Once they are 1 year old, you might want to purchase an ALBC strain cockerel next year to breed to them from a breeder. An ALBC bird will not be a total outcross but will give you some genetic vigor for some time. Laura (Pathfinders), Roy (rnau), JamesC & others on here all have ALBC strain Buckeyes. You can save a Sandhill cockerel or two and breed to the ALBC X Sandhill offspring and so forth. Good Luck!

I have been hesitant to get birds from anywhere except breeders, as I've heard that some of them are not of type, though I thought that I heard Sandhill was good. As they have Urch Buckeyes, I hope that they have Urch Javas, too. (OOps, sorry, wrong thread

) If I don't get any Buckeyes close by this year, I may get some from there.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to get my order placed this week for Buckeyes from Sandhill (is nice b/c I don't have to pay for shipping).

I joined the dark red/ buckeye nut side and got some chicks from a local breeder only got a dozen but im planing on getting more.

I wish they would have something like that closer to me! Ahhh it is taking the 2 pips forever! The humidity is dropping and I just put in some warm water. I hate to do that, I always worry that I am goofing stuff up.
