Here are photos of our Buckeye chicks, hatched about January 20-23, 2010. These are from Jen Scott, out of David Putoff. This hutch has two sides. We removed a section and they have full run of both sides. Feed and water is in both sides.

Notice our home made waterer. It is a 2" PVC pipe with a cap on one end and an elbow on the other. It is attached with two 3" conduit brackets. With a hole saw I driled the holes about an inch apart. It holds almost a gallon of water. We can add a 2 liter bottle to the elbow that will be attached with a small bungee cord.

Not to get too far off topic, but we have 4 dogs. Two outside (Beagle and a Lab mix we hunt pheasants with) and two inside (Dalmation and Rhodesian/German Shepard mix) at night/outside most of the day. The Beagle was a rescue because she was a chicken killer as was going to be shot by her former owners. We decided to get chickens a few years down the road, and sure enough she killed one that got out of it's enclosure.

I saw an episode of the Dog Whisperer (I know some don't agree with his methods, including me sometimes.). I did what he did on the show, and it worked! Our chickens are now free range on the farm and we haven't had a death since training. It took just under an hour to train all four dogs. I spent 30 minutes of that with the Beagle--stubborn dog, but that was it.

Basically you get them in the calm/submissive state (I asked for down and made them stay.) Then presented them with a chicken (one of our clamer 'pet' roos). The chicken was scared out of it's mind, but didn't run away, it just walked around me. When a dog would start to get excited, I put two fingers on the side of their necks and made the 'shssst' noise. They calmed right down, and after a couple of minutes I let them up and they walked away totally not interested in the bird. In fact, they actively avoid the chickens now.

I did 3 dogs at the same time, and let them go when they could maintain the calm state with the chicken present. The Beagle screamed and threw a fit for about 20 mintues--but all I ever used was the two fingers and the noise. It took her another 10 to submit and relax--I think part of the reason it took so long was that she had no previous training (no sit, no stay, ect.).

Anyway, I think most dogs could be rehabilitated. I'm sure there's exceptions to every rule, but ours responded very well.

Hey Jim, great looking birds. My name is Puthoff, it's german. "Pute" is German for turkey, "hof" is farm. In the old country we were turkey farmers...... who knew!!

Good luck with rehabbing dogs that eat birds. I haven't ever heard of it working well.

Day 21 for the buckeye eggs no action. Looks like I lost them due to a temperature spike in the bator I use for the hatcher. Anybody got some chicks they could send me next week. Thanks Scott

I think mine actually started hatching on day 22/23. Then Arkansas mail service may have scrambled them from SE Arkansas to NW Arkansas. Are the eggs clear? Any sign of life?

When I candled them at 10 days they all looked good. I don't think I should look at them again do you, at least not at this point.

Thanks
Scott

Keep the door closed. Follow the incubator instructions. Wait till day 25 before giving up. An egg won't usually BLOW UP until after 30 days or more. Have had hens that stayed for more than 30 days without chicks. So just be patient!

Har, My temp started low on my hatch (the ones Jim has) and they didn't even start to hatch until late in day 22. How high and how long was your temp spike?

ETA: I have some coming out Sunday that aren't all promised *if all goes well* but I'm down in the southeast corner, and you're way up there in Rogers. Anybody going thataway?

I don't really know how long it spiked since I was sleeping. As soon as I noticed it in the am I was able to get it down in about two hours.
