You guys and gals are killing me with all of your incubating and hatching buckeye chicks!

I wait until after the county fair to put eggs under any broodys I have, because I want to be there to be sure everyone is doing ok. My DS is in 4-H and I'm his club's poultry leader, so we spend 10 days out at the fair, and have to rely on my other DS to feed (he's not into chickens).

I did order some buckeyes, but they will not be shipped until the beginning of May, which seems like months away. Luckily, none of my hens have gone broody yet this year, so I don't have the temptation of just sticking a couple of eggs under her.

In the meantime, I'll just keep a complete supply of papertowels to wipe up my drool while I am reading all of your posts.

My 7+/- dozen are looking pretty good. I've got a couple of clears, but the rest are developing fine. Wish I could say the same for my Japanese. I guess I'm gonna have to go shear some bottoms. I think the buckeyes and the Japanese are on the far opposite ends of the " maintenance required" scale.

SHOW QUESTION: will a broken toe count against a chicken in a show?

Quote:
It depends on the judge. Some care more than others. If they see it, and it's important to them, then yes. But there may be other factors about the bird that makes the toe irrelevant in the overall scheme of things.

So the answer is, It Depends.

I have the buckeye bantam, and need a rooster, preadator kill my only buckeye rooster.

PM me if you know where i can find one...

Why, thank you Chipper! My kids were playing around with the camera and took pictures of me!

Hey, my Buckeyes from JamesA are on lockdown. Due to hatch the 19th ! YAY! The first 9 I hatched are growing well. I am using the 30% Game Bird by Purina. Do you use that forever, or just for awhile? I read somewhere that after the first 12 weeks, excessive protein could affect the reproductive organs. Should I decrease to 20 - 22% then?

I'm using 28% Game Bird Starter and planned on keeping them on it to about 20 weeks.I don't know if the excessive protein, being harmful, is fact or myth.
Any other opinions on this ?
