Just had 5 more hatch yesterday from my second batch of eggs, need to take a picture of those cuties!

My day old chicks are a tad darker then those I believe. will also be my first time with babys I hatched 3 different breeds and all mine are consistant in color. I will post a few pics soon as I remember where i left my camera. LOL

Okay, y'all are killin' me!

WHAT ARE THE DANG RESULTS FROM THE OHIO NATIONALS!???! I've been too, too busy trouble-shooting a pair of sick 3-week-old chicks thinking '...surely the judging is done... surely, someone's posted by now...'.

This morning I heard at least one of my Buckeye roosters crow. They are 6 mos old now and finally getting the hang of it.

I thought I kept 3 roos out of my chicks, however, I have recently discovered that one of my hens was a roo in disguise.

I can't wait to see what they look like with all of their feathers. It seems the molt this year is never ending.
I have an almost naked RIR bantam hen, and it is getting down into the upper 30's at night.


Revolutionmama my chicks were lighter than I thought they would be, but they got darker as they got older. Don't panic!

Our buckeyes are 13 weeks old today, and they have developed a bad habit of picking the feathers off each others backs and eating them. I'm wondering if they started this because we were feeding them 29% protein turkey starter, but when we went to the feed supply last week they no longer had it, nor did they have game bird starter. So, we bought regular organic grower that's 24% protein. It seems like the feather picking and eating started about the time we switched feeds.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing happening, and what would you suggest? We just rebanded them today, and some of their backs are starting to look pretty sad - we need to get this behavior stopped!

This is our first group of buckeyes, and other than the feather picking - they seem like great chickens. They are so curious, and quite friendly. Of thirty day-old chicks, 28 have made it this far, and we think there are 14 cockerels and 14 pullets.

A change in feed will definitely do that, especially if the new feed doesn't contain any animal protein. In my experience, especially with Buckeyes, chickens need a source of animal protein, soy just doesn't cut it.

You may wish to either:

a) increase their space, they may be too crowded and picking because they're bored
b) add some animal protein into their food, one way or another. If push comes to shove you can always get some ground beef and cook it and give it to them.

Remember, chickens are NOT vegetarians, they'll eat anything! Mice, lizards, bugs, snakes, you name it, if it moves, chickens will eat it.

Good luck with it, let us know if it doesn't get better and we can offer more suggestions.
