Pathfinders: . . . And to whoever I passed along the advice I got about keeping birds with black speckling because they'd make such good breeders (advice I got from a "legacy breeder" last year), please do not follow that advice.

Ah yes, the "Legacy Breeder" (who has bred Buckeyes "forever") told us both the same thing -- (at least we can both testify that we heard it the same time, right?)-- yes and I admit I have been hung up on the slate bar and we shouldn't be so much. None of them have red all the way through anyway-- perhaps, use that really light male (hope you kept him) you had and throw those genes in the mix. I am seeing a lot of black speckling on cockerels everywhere -- there's still a good number of the normal hens out there!

Just don't permit that black speckling in your cockerels -- that will really throw things off the track.

Good looking pullet, Ms. Hatch-- and it looks like Laura's pullet from last year!

MMPoultryFarms: your birds look great-- Putoff is putting out some really good Buckeyes.

Hello all, I am so over-joyed that i found this thread, i''ve read so much and finally my eye balls were drying out so i had to skip to the last few pages, but i have been wanting to add buckeyes to our small flock of 19 (RIR,black australorp, white java, barred rock, goldenlaced wyandottes, comets, and a couple bantys.).
So, since i am from Northwest Ohio 1. should i wait to get some buckeyes til spring or can i do it now if i have everything ready? 2. Can or should they be with the rest of the flock or do they do better alone with themselves? We are not going to show them just raise for our family to love and learn from so 3. does it matter who or where i get them from? I want them to be healthy, my children consider them pets, although we do cull when it is absolutely necessary. I have broody banty hens that we added to our flock this past spring so 4. maybe they would hatch some chicks if i had eggs????? We have 3 coops presently, 2 being used with the older hens and roo in one and the younger hens in the other. the other is empty. We have used a chicken tractor around the yard since we have eagles and hawks and other predators that frequent our area, so 5. will buckeyes thrive in a run? Its a big run, but no grass. 6. Any advice on where i should look for some buckeyes? 7. If i hatch some do i have to make them a certain line ???? I am not doing it as a business just to keep the breed going. Thank you for starting and feeding this thread!

It should be! I'd be sure to get there Friday afternoon and/or very early Saturday morning, as the sale birds go fast!
