Buckeye Chicken Breeders

Is anyone ever willing to sell the fertilized eggs?
Yes. It depends where you live and all. I know of one in ohio right now that is selling hatching eggs but he has a list going. I have a day job and would not trust my eggs for hatching at the moment because I cant get them until evening. I know they are partially frozen when I get them. Let me know if you need more help finding some.

I will be starting my incubators in 2 weeks. If I have any to sell, it will just be locally. But not until early summer.

I've considered this breed and a local business is getting some Buckeye chicks this March. I always had a preference for rose combs and pea combs. What is their temperment like and how are they as layers?

Buckeyes are an intelligent, friendly breed. The females are inquisitive and often so friendly you have to push them away from your feet in order to walk around the pens. The males are respectful of both humans and their wives (a trait I cherish.) The infrequent male who shows signs of aggression should be culled, as it is not a breed trait.

They free-range very well, and are known for their willingness to hunt down and eat pretty much anything that moves, including but not limited to bugs of all sorts, snakes, lizards, and rodents.

Buckeyes generally lay between 150 and 200 medium to large brown eggs per year. As a dual purpose bird, extra males provide a good source of flavorful meat.

They tolerate both heat and cold very well. They do best on a feed with animal protein included, and at a level of about 18% as adults. As with any chicken, they thrive when given access to pasture during the day.

They are, in my opinion, the perfect homestead bird.

I will be putting the DIY incubator together this week just as soon as my GQF heating element comes in. After that, my girls need to get busy laying.
