I've been doing a lot of research on budgies in anticipation of possibly getting one. I've experience with conures, cockatoos and cockatiels, and I'm stuck on two issues. Where best to get one, as there are only larger pet stores in my area and no breeders nearby that I can find online, and whether they will bond like their larger cousins and become jealous of other people.

By which I mean, will it attack my husband if it bonds to me? They're such lovely little birds but he's very bird nervous and I don't want it dive bombing him like I've had other birds do. .

No matter where you buy it just be sure to look it over carefully. Be sure to buy young bird; do not buy a mature bird as there is no way to be sure of age. If you buy just one get a male. Females can become quite jealous; not so with males.

By which I mean, will it attack my husband if it bonds to me?No, usually tame budgies are quite welcoming to other people. It is possible for a budgie to bond with two people even though it may have a favorite. They're such lovely little birds but he's very bird nervous and I don't want it dive bombing him like I've had other birds do. .
Should you have other questions feel free to contact me directly through, "Start a Conversation". Best of luck with your new pet.

What School said :thumbsup

If you can't find a breeder, pet stores are usually fine - just make sure you do some research on determining health, age and gender (if that matters to you) as most pet store employees know very little about the animals they sell.

Dive bombing isn't really a budgie thing. They are flock birds, not one person birds, so they're usually really good at being friendly to anyone once they've initially been tamed and trained. That said, if your husband is uncomfortable with the budgie flying around by his head, you could give it a light clip to keep him/her flying lower. (Again research to make sure you know how to clip properly if you're so inclined. Budgies in pet stores often come clipped, so you might start out that way anyway.)

Search on FB for bird breeders in your area/state. I belong to several and there are always hand reared babies available from breeders. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've actually found a small pet store that breeds their own babies, and they've got some beautiful little budgies in colors I've never seen in person.

Hopefully in the near future, but thanks for the information for now!

I have 3 budgies that I purchased from Petco. They are very cute, energetic and lovely little birds but they aren't bonding to me all that much, probably because I keep 3 of them together in the same cage - they seem to only want to be with each other and not me. But other than that they are very cute and not super loud or anything. I think if I would have gotten a single budgie it wouldn't have been so hard to tame them.

Your thoughts are exactly right.

I'm trying to figure out if this cage will work. It has 1 inch bar width and will budgies really get stuck in there? It just seems too small.

I'd appreciate some opinions, the size is so good for a budgie cage, nice and wide.
