*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Our first eggs!
This is our first year with chickens and at first we thought this was from our Silkie pullet because of the size, but someone on the Silkie thread informed me that
these were too dark in color to come from the Silkie and was more likely from one of our BO girls.
They're about 22 weeks old and I think these all came from one hen who is showing the most red on the comb and the waddles.
I don't think these are wind eggs since they're all the same size, but assuming they aren't how long do they lay little eggs before they become full size?

We had one of our Buffs, Peanut, start laying on Sept 13th, she was 20 weeks and three days. I noticed the same thing in that her eggs were sort of small. I have been saving her eggs on the kitchen counter and in just 10 days of her laying I can definitely see them getting a little larger.

We are up to 5 eggs now and they all seem to be about the same size.
I'm just tickled we're laying and I told Susie we're saving up for a big omelette.

OMG, I got a squat this morning. Totally unexpected. I was doing my morning chores and the most mature of my three BO's has snuck up behind me. She likes to peck at me so I turned around and said, Don't peck me! and reached out to pet her and she squatted. A full on squat where her head was snapping back and forth as her body froze and her little brain is going, WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?

Then the big shake and she walked off.

So I'm FINALLY in in the zone. Hopefully, I'll be posting an egg photo soon.

Woo hoo!! Isn't it crazy how happy that squat makes us? I was describing the different squats our ladies do to our neighbor yesterday. I said, "One just sort of does a little curtsy, another one does a full on, hit the deck, wings spread squat and the other one is somewhere in the middle." My neighbor said, "We are having a very strange conversation." Needless to say she is not a chicken person.

It IS funny how they all squat different. My Jersey Giant ALWAYS squats for me. Daily! When we go on vacation, I don't ask the pet sitter to "scratch" my hen so she goes without for the week. Well, when we return, she will actually walk right up to me and squat as if to ask for it. And if I don't scratch right away, she starts to stomp her feet. It's hysterical. I really need to get it on film. And she does a big, full body shake after.

I only ordered 2 buff orp pullets and they both ended up being roos! Ugh. One of the boys is the head honcho, the other doesn't even crow. Will he ever crow? They get along fine so far. The boys aren't trying to mate the girls yet either. The whole flock is 16 weeks old.
Here is Big Boy George

So far he's a good boy, altho he's quite bold. Always the first to come looking for a handout!

When you have a dominant Roo, those beneath him generally stifle their crowing and mating. If you rehomed no. 1, no.2 would probably start acting like the alpha roo.
