*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I do have some pictures, and I can take more, however I am not very computer savvy and I will have to figure out how to upload them and then post them here. I will get them on here eventually, but it may take me awhile.

Can we get pics??
The female looks like those buff and black ameraucanas (easter eggers?). She is almost completely buff on her head and slowly gets more black until her tail is almost entirely black. I have not found a bird that looks exactly like her brother but he is similar to the red junglefowl or welsummer roosters, I am sure there are others but those were the only 2 I could think of. I hope this helps you visualize what they look like until I can get some pictures uploaded.

Ethically you cannot represent your chickens as being something they are not as far as breed type is concerned. You are just setting yourself up for a lawsuit.

But. Why couldn't you describe them as being Partridge colored when you describe them, such as Astralorp/Buff Orpington cross? These birds are partridge colored, etc. That way you are giving a description of color and not misrepresenting their breed.

So I have 5 chickens, and one BO (as seen as my profile pic). I would like to gain more affection for her, everyone says they are great but I find her a little boring and she also tends to wander away from the group. I took her out a couple nights ago in an effort to clicker train her. She responded more to my body language than the clicker but I know I have to be patient. I think she was a little confused as to why i singled her out and she kept trying to get back to the run...

Idk, anyone have any suggestions for bringing out the best in her?

Thank you! That is a great idea, I will have to remember that.

Because BOs are so docile, do they get picked on more than others? My 2 BOs back are featherless, while my SS all look great. Their feathers appear to be broken and/or pulled out. No blood, but one BO has a large black scab. ???

Putting neosporin on the scab wouldn't hurt to make sure it doesnt get infected, when you say they are "featherless" that sounds bad but I dont know much about that ;( poor chicklens! My buff is pretty dominating :0

I don't have pics, but I'll try to give you a visual. The saddles are featherless, but they have their tail feathers and their wings and neck are fine. One of them is broody right now, so I was hoping that would give her time to recuperate, but two weeks later she looks the same.

How old are they and do you have a rooster? When my buffs were in their first year it was like their feathers were weak. I had to put saddles on them until their first molt. Their feathers are not likely going to grow back in two weeks and are less likely to start growing if they're broody. You can up their protein with high protein snacks or add in a higher protein food for a while. Make sure you keep oyster shell available as well.

Mites/lice can cause feather loss so you may want to just take a quick look. If you don't see any bugs then I would attribute this to having weaker feathers at the moment and wait for them to molt fully. Since mine had their first molt they have not had bare backs. (besides bare spots during the next molt)
