buff polish hen acting weird

It might take days to get her perky. If she does not eat and drink good, you may have to help her. Mix up some vit/electrolyte water and mix it with her chicken food to make it wet, sometimes I mix thawed out frozen green peas and my birds go wild over that. If she does not eat that, put more vit/electrolyte water in the feed to make a soup and you can feed it to her with a dropper. Wrap her up in a towel when you do this so she can not flap around and you can keep her still so she does not aspirate any liquid.

Will putting sugar in the water help her? does she have to have an open space to run free while im doctoring her up?

She did get some food, pecking it out of the bowl, and out of my hand. her food thing in her throat was empty according to my friend, and then he told me she might not have been fed in 3 weeks, i called him, he said it was a few days since he had refilled their troff..

Dave - everyone is telling you to get some food and water in her now. It doesn't matter if you put her back in the coop later or leave her in your bathroom in the tub on a towel. Right now she needs food and water. If she will eat out of your hand, great. If not make a watery mixture of cat food and egg yolk and try feeding her with a dropper and see if she will open her mouth for it.

DO WHATEVER IT TAKES RIGHT NOW TO GET SOME ELECTROLYTES AND NOURISHMENT IN HER!!!!!!!!! She is dehydrated and malnurished. After this immediate crisis is over, I want you to go in the morning and buy some raw un-pasturized apple cider vinegar. It will help her immunity. Use one TBLE (tablespoon) per gallon of water. If you want to know what is happening to her body listen closely....due to lack of protein, vitamins etc. the body (and it doesn't matter if it's human or animal) will start digesting the muscles as a last resort for that protein. This is what is happening right now as I type this. It's imperative that you get some food down her right now. She will not survive otherwise. You are a very good person to take these young chickens on. Kudos to you. We're not yelling at you. We just want you to understand the grave condition that hen is in at this very moment.

i would take her one thing after another until you find something she will eat - plain yogurt, high quality canned cat food, mealworms, crickets, greens, watermelon - all along make sure you have the dry chicken feed available round the clock. i read somewhere that someone mixes a bit of buttermild with their chick feed as a special treat for their kids. Just don't leave that sit for too long or it will go bad.

Also, let her know you care, animals sense that. Get eye contact, tell her you are there to help her. If she's been neglected, she probably doesn't trust people, and you need to build that back up.

Good luck. We're all pulling for you!
