Building my first coop! - progress thread

Next up: repainting that old door. It’s SUCH a pain in the ass! The stripper dissolved the top layer of paint, revealing several other layers of different colors of paint underneath (because of course) and those did not come off, even after reapplying and soaking overnight. Now I’m using a combination of metal scraper, chisel and planer to scrape that damn paint off. The door is so old that its paint probably contains lead, which is why I don’t want to sand it or just leave it and paint on top, but damn. I’ll try to clean up at least the bottom foot or two, at chicken level, and just leave the rest and paint over it.

That’s what I wanted to do from the start... scrape the loose stuff and bury the rest under several layers of latex... but my husband is too worried about the lead and wants it all gone. We’ve had some bad experience with exceptionally high levels of lead on our property (had the yard tested and it was so bad that we had to bring in 3 tractor trailers’ worth of clean fill to cover it all up). So now he’s extra cautious with anything to do with lead. Which I understand, but still... I hate the scraping.

I have a solution to my hardware cloth problem! (Forgetting to sandwich it between the wall and the window trim). I have a bunch of pressure treated strips, left over from another project, which fit perfectly inside the inner edge of the window trim. They are a bit under 1 1/2 inches wide. I’m thinking of bending the hardware cloth along those inner edges and screwing down the strips on top and into the edges of the trim. Would this be enough?

Good point. I haven’t tried bending it yet... might likely come to regret it if I start. I’ll try the stack up trim, thanks for the idea!
I've done some bending, worked ok on my concrete garage floor, but it ain't easy.
Bending 4 sides to fit nicely into the window opening would be a bear.

I’m stubborn so I’ll probably try bending it first, but it’s good to have a backup plan. I didn’t want to put another layer of full size trim on top of the trim, wouldn’t look good, but these half size strips would create a nice effect.
