Building My First Coop

I also have a raised coop so my birds can go underneath. They really like that in the summer for shade! I love your plan to have the roof go over the run. I wish I’d thought of that!

Thank you . Glad to hear your birds utilize the space under to coop . Could you not add a roof over your run ?

Since I don't have the option to cover the pens except with netting, here are the rain/shade tables I made for each pen. The birds do get under them and dust bathe and to get out of the rain.

Since I have several coops and pens, I made rain/shade tables for the birds to get under. A few years ago I did plant trees in the pens so they my birds have shade. Where do you live? (state)

I'm on Long Island in N.Y. . We get some heat and humidity and we also get cold and snow . Your shade tables are a good idea .

Welcome to BYC! Your coop & run build seems to be going very well. I too got my first chicks before I built the coop, however, I used an existing shed then built a run in front of it so that helped a lot. Good to see you are building it very sturdy so that will last a very long time. Can't wait to see pictures.

Thank you , I do tend to over build , my Dad and Grandpa did too , guess thats where I got that from :)

Today's progress , got the upper plates all up on the run section and the last post trimmed level with the rest .

Got the plywood for the coop deck , cut and fitted I flipped it over to get a coat of deck paint on the bottom side .

When the paint dried I flipped it back and nailed it down

Might as well paint the top side too while I have some paint left , and I'm not sure how long I'll be getting it closed in .

Then it was onto trusses and purlins

I picked up some old windows from a Facebook page and had my contractor install them with hinges at the top and hardware cloth for screens. I used one of the smaller windows at floor level (without h.c.) to be used for clean out -- just unhook the window inside and hook it in the open position outside, park the wheelbarrow underneath and push everything out! It also illuminates the lower part of the coop.
I also covered the floor and walls to beak level on the roosts with cheap vinyl flooring -- easy cleaning!
