Building My First Coop

Pics
Almost done! When are you getting your chickens?

Yes , getting close :) . After the hardware cloth and predator barrier is done there are just odds and ends , roosts , poop boards , ramp into coop , gable vents , quick easy stuff . My daughter says the birds are suppose to ship the week of Oct 14 . That gives me a little over a week to get this all buttoned up .

Well , I got the far side of the coop and run hardware cloth buried and done , so many roots on that side had to use a digging bar the whole 15' of trench about the whole 1' depth . :he That far side was a struggle but its done . Just the door end of the run left to do and thats only 6' wide so it shouldn't be too bad . I'll have just enough hardware cloth to finish this up , used a 50' roll of 24" and a 50' roll of 48" .

Sounds like a lot of work. Why not an apron instead?

Yes , it is a lot of work . I am putting down a 24" apron of 14 gauge galv. welded wire . The hardware cloth going straight down 1' is just a secondary measure , will keep the chickens from digging out , and keep vermin out that may get past the apron .

What mesh spacing?

Didn't think about chickens digging out (tho I surely know they do that),
but definitely figured it's a good rodent barrier.

Hardware cloth is all done , predator barrier done on both long sides and front end of run , all tied in to hardware cloth nice and secure . Will finish up the short side by back door to coop tomorrow .
