Building My First Coop

Pics
Yeah, yesterday's storm caught us on the highway actually, it was quite intense. We got a worse one last week, with downed trees and everything. I don't have a people door yet, so I guess I won't know how I did with weatherproofing until that's in place. Right now everything inside is wet, nail box I left in there is floppy wet, rust already on the nails... I should put that door on already, just been busy doing Halloween stuff with the kids.

The girls are growing like weeds , they've weathered the last few storms like champs . They like soaking up the afternoon sun and they like the perch I put in the run for them .

Nice! I was wondering if you had a photo of them using the perch. That looks like a good sunny spot for it.

Thanks . Yes , they use that perch almost every time they go out . The afternoon sun only shines there for about an hour and a half at most , but on a brisk day like today it must feel good to them .

I figured I better get the chicks going on drinking from the chicken nipples on the heated winter water pail ( the cold is coming) so I went and got threaded hook for the pail , filled the pail , removed their other water jug. They were like kids getting a new toy , right on top of me while I was hanging it . I pecked at one of the nipples while they were watching with my finger just to get some water dripping , that was all it took , they were at it like old pro's .

It went down to 27* F last night , coldest its been since we got the chicks . I would say they are between 7/8 weeks to 9/10 weeks old since we don't have an exact hatch date and one or two are bigger more feathered looking . I do have a "Cozy Coop Heater" wall mounted in the coop and did have it on low setting the first 4 nights we had the chicks (they arrived Oct . 17th) , we have had rain , wind , temps down into the 30's since we got them and they have been handling it just fine . Last night was no difference , they were fine , heat was not turned on . Evidently I don't need to worry about it as much as I have been . Here they are this morn hanging out .

Can you raise the waterer, so it's back height of the pullets? It will be easier for them to drink from it? It looks like the one in the pic is bending down pretty good to use it. You may have raised it already, since the pic.
