Building My First Coop

Got the siding on front of coop , didn't cut for the pop door yet .

Late next week I am going to spend a week with my son and daughter in law and grandson and the maternal grandparents as well , up in the Catskills , son and family coming from Phoenix , his inlaws coming from Minnesota . My daughter ordered the chicks today , they ship week of Oct 14th (4 week olds) . I'll only be able to get siding done before I leave so I'll be busy when I get back . Roofing , trim , hardware cloth , doors , hardware . Glad I'm retired .

How are you going to cut the door out? Starting at the bottom edge or some distance into the board? I'm trying to figure out how to cut my pop door out. It's 10 inches above floor level (to allow for a thick layer of bedding that won't spill out) and I don't want to start the cut at the edge of the board, but I don't think I have the right tools for a plunge cut into the board... Maybe make a starter cut at 10 inches in with the router (plunge attachment) and then insert the jigsaw into it to cut around the whole perimeter of the pop door with....

I'll mark it inside in between the studs and drill a small hole in each corner , then go outside and mark it using the drilled holes as a guide and use my circular saw and plunge cut it . I could use my jig saw but circular saw will be faster/easier . Mine will be approx 8" off the floor .

Ah, that's right, your awesome plunge saw I should look into getting one myself. I have a mini circular saw... Can't plunge with it but I could make progressively longer cuts into the board first with the router (to break the surface), and then with the jigsaw to elongate the cut enough to fit the mini's blade in there and make the rest of the cut.

Ah, that's right, your awesome plunge saw I should look into getting one myself. I have a mini circular saw... Can't plunge with it but I could make progressively longer cuts into the board first with the router (to break the surface), and then with the jigsaw to elongate the cut enough to fit the mini's blade in there and make the rest of the cut.

You should be able to plunge cut with about any circular saw , I am using a Dewalt 6.5" 18 volt saw mostly but I could plunge cut with almost any circular saw . You mentioned a jig saw , why not just drill a hole in all 4 corners of your pop door location and then use your jig saw .

Yup....if you've not done it before practice on a sacrificial piece of wood first.

Hell, I can make plunge cut with a jig saw....or a sawzall(pretty ugly tho)

Yeah, I guess I could try plunging... just without a guide it's gonna be ugly, haha. I think I'm gonna go with holes in the corners and then the jigsaw.
