Building Our New Coop

Well we have the foundation laid. We are not putting in a traditional floor. We have sandy ground and it drains well. After we laid the fencing down, we added gravel; then sand, then a nice layer of garden soil. On top of that , after the coop is finished we will add shavings. This photo is showing the soil going over the sand and gravel.

This is before the gravel and sand. We put chain link fence under the whole foundation.

This is the inside of a friends coop. He gets shavings from a guy that uses them in his horse stall. My friend just spreads the horse manure/shavings in the coop, rakes in the chicken droppings from under the roost and that's it.

We worked all day Monday building the wall frames up in the drive way where it is flat. Tues we carried them down and put them up. After they were up we bolted them down.

Wed. We got the roof braces up and the door framed in. Thur. we got the plywood up for the roof.

Friday the sheet metal went up and 2 walls. WE,R GETT'N THERE

So, we are thinking 3 windows + the door,,, this coop will be 6X8,, What do you all think????

Looking good... I got windows that are 14 x 21 at http://www.shed-parts.com/14-21-shed-playhouse-window.htm.. They also sell shutters!

This is the silkie coop.



LF Coop (6 x 8) 3 windows and door. Also put on a screen door. Got these windows
from the clearance rack at Lowes.

We are going to make the windows. No glass, hinged with mesh wire screening. Kinda like a chicken door but a window.

Getting the fencing up
4 Black Australorps are in the coop. They were 3 weeks old Friday. We moved them to make room for the new chicks.
