Got my first fence post up! It's a little less than two feet in the ground. I dug the hole with the shovel because I want to be a pioneer woman! And also I don't know how to use the tools. Taking a break for lunch, then if it's not raining I'll do the next. If it is raining, I'll probably quilt.

Get this shovel from fiskars.

Wider spade solid steel fairly light. lifetime warrenty. And this is a serious Warranty. I split one shovel straight up the spade and they sent me a new one after a quick photo and email. Didn't even want the old one. A friend welded it and now I have two.

I seriously dig a lot and this is the best shovel I've ever owned.

well all this work being done and i havnt got alot done being so cold out you guys have motivated me to go back in the cold and work as there is stuff that needs to get done...so off i go

No raspberries on this one. The raspberry fence will be similar in support structure, but with just a few cross beams. Like a Wild West prop. I might do some confederate jasmine on this one, because I like the way it smells and I think it's an evergreen. This is going at the end of the house, to section off the yard and keep the chickens off my porch.

Two feet in the ground isn't very deep if you really want a sturdy fence. I would suggest getting a post hole digger like this...


And set your posts in 3 feet down. You probably don't have to worry about frost there in Louisiana, but if you got lose and sandy soil, you'll probably want that extra foot of post in the ground, especially if you're going to have a post that supports a gate. Oh, and make sure you get the longest handle post hole digger handles you can get. The frost line here in Michigan is 42 inches, so we need to dig deep holes here and those longer handles really do come in handy, especially when you're near the bottom of the hole.

Thanks for the advice! I'm pretty sure we have a post hole digger, but I'm also pretty sure that I'm not strong enough to get it deep enough. I'll get help for the post that supports the gate, so we can go deeper. One post was in sand, and one is in hard clay. It's just a little cross fence to keep the chickens out of that section of yard, but I would like it to be reasonable sturdy.

I worked until I heard thunder and the wind blew cool. I'm actually really impressed with my progress! A few pics:

As you can see we had just a little weak sunshine for a few minutes. I'm really impressed with myself right now. I'm going to trim the end on the house side with loppers. I cut the trees with a hatchet, because that's all husband trusted me with.

great progress...im so excited for you...the boxes should be here tomorrow...so well see...i think im going to double box them as well....goal here is to not have one broken egg....

incase anyone is like what....some eggs are getting shipped to Louisiana...i can wait to see the chickies hatch...still getting about 15-20 eggs a day...so however many fits in the box ill send...my post office didnt have any of the boxes i wanted so they are being shipped...its just easier to go to the website and have them sent straight to your house and they are free...so cant complain there....

well taking it easy tonight...getting ready to eat and enjoy a movie...the two cabinet incubators should show up this week...so super excited about that...anyways...night everyone...see you in the a.m.

Woman power! I love it. Haha. I bought the cutest little chainsaw, its battery powered and will cut 3" tree limbs easily, 4" with some effort. I think its even safer for me than hatchet because there is a safety button and a trigger that you have to engage at the same time. I use it more than I ever expected. Just a thought...

even in the freezing cold they love to be outside with papa...so i got some more work done in the back on the 10x16...hoping today i can finish it up...been slacking thats for sure...but off to work i go...post some pics on how far i get...i have taken a break in all the forums to get caught up...behind a bit...i also found a great hoop pen design....so some of them will be going up...alot easier to build then all the wood and roofs and such...and way cheaper....and still just as strong and about the same size as most of my pens....ill keep you guys posted...have a wonderful day

Watch their feet tho in the frigid weather.......they can be running and playing and all of a sudden stop cold(haha) not able to walk.
I had to carry my pup into the house a couple times this winter because I let him stay out too long when it was too cold.
