I got this hen from the coop today that someone surrendered. I didn’t really get to look at her much until I got her home then quickly noticed there’s something wrong with her feet (like large knots/bumps on both her middle toes and they’re curved). and she has a slight limp, seems more on the left side. She also sits/lays more on one side after standing awhile, my guess because it hurts her. ☹️ My first thought was bumble foot but no signs of cuts, and no black spot anywhere on the bottom of her feet, perfectly clean and pink. Also I don’t think bumble foot would curve her whole toe. Was she maybe born this way or injured at some point and didn’t heal right? Any ideas?

If it looks clean from the bottom then I would say that’s just swelling from it breaking maybe. The toes curved slightly is normal. However her having them on both feet is very odd. Is it hot? My only other guess would be some sort of either birth defect or a defect that happened over time as a chick were her bones didn’t grow properly. Which I’m not sure if you can really do much then, possible try giving her supplements but I don’t think that would fix the issue.

It is on both her feet almost in the same spot/area and looks very similar on both feet. I’m in the PNW, so definitely not hot here. Not sure if you meant the climate or the temperature of her feet?

yes the temperature of her toes that are injured

They don’t seem warmer than the rest of her feet. I washed her feet and soaked in epsom salt for like 10-15 min to get a better look and feel. The knots are hard and then there are other places around them that are soft and swollen. Here are some better pics of top and bottom of her feet. I don’t see any scabs or sores. She’s having a lot of trouble standing today and sitting down a lot during this so seems painful to her. She’s also opening her beak to breath a few times as she’s laying down. I noticed her crop didn’t empty last night, so suspect it’s her putting pressure on it as she laying to that side...this poor girl just seems a mess. How anyone could just drop her at the coop to be resold in this condition is just beyond me. 😣

Huh very strange, I wish I had more knowledge as to what this is but it’s not bumble foot. Maybe @aart or @theoldchick can help you, they have more knowledge than I do and may be able to help

ohhhh oof
her toes are really twisted. poor girl.
you should let her wade in a bathtub with warm , not hot, water to get pressure off of it. do that daily for about 30 min. to correct her toes you should put pipe cleaners underneath her foot and attach them on there, and over time they should heal.
this happened with my rooster before. try it. she'll feel much better.

Any idea the cause in your rooster for the twisted toes? Gout as others are suggesting above or something else?

Pipe cleaners are fairly flexible...not something more rigid, like a popsicle stick? What do you attach it with, like paper bandage tape?

She did seem to like her bath today, she immediately just sank and soaked. The hair dryer after...not so much. Certainly something can continue trying.

For those suggesting gout , looks like cause is underlying kidney damage. What is her expected quality of life? Just wondering if it’s best to end suffering in that case as it seems isn’t much one can do to help in that case?
