thanks for all the help, this is pretty far along, and will go to the feedstore tomorow and get pen, but i do have the tylan also- so oral would really be an option? so i inject into his foot, sigh.... he is gonna hate me... but i'd be worse it it killed him... as we used to say- do what ya gotta do

If they don't feel you digging around, they wont feel the needle! They are very tough! you can spray bactine on the skin where you are injecting it if you want to be very sure that he doesnt feel it.
I haven't found that systemic antibiotics work on staph, even when its spread up a leg. Its a localized infection because of how the chicken's body encapsulates it. Thats why Ill sometimes inject the thigh or into the actual hole, because it addresses the thing directly and blocks it from moving upwards.
Its not so much that it will kill the chicken, but it can cripple them and its a real pain in the ass if you're like me....I tend to let them live if they can do the things that chickens do....so if they seem happy and can hobble around and eat and scratch, I keep them...which means I have to check all the time because you can never know in advanced cases if you got it all...and it does come back until you get it all...
I can see why some people just wait till the bird is sitting down alot (which would indicate discomfort) and then put them down.
Its each person's choice, but for a pet, as mine are pets, try to treat and see what happens. Ive had some good success.
