Bumblefoot

Seems to me that if the infection has been in their system a long time untreated with oral or injected antibiotics, that it could cause organ failure.

But of the ducks I have treated, I lost only one, and that was from egg yolk peritonitis.

So how long before the swelling goes away? I looks pretty good, but still quite a bit of swelling. Wondering if I got it all.

Yesterday it had no scab (it was adhered to bandage even with neosporin but had obviously been draining). Today there is a scab and swelling doesn't appear to have gone done anymore even after two days of rest and neosporin. It's not red or anything. Maybe I am just too impatient. She's no longer tolerating being held to change bandages and such either.

Thats where a nice big towel comes in handy, wrap her up and then change the bandage. you might want to keep it open a little longer to make sure it continues to drain. Also there is a product called Vetericyn which comes in a spray that is for wounds and infections, you can pick it up at TSC it is fantastic for problems like this. I usually spray twice a day and even use it on my dogs.

After human surgery I have seen friends and family with drains near the area operated on. I wonder if there is just some fluid in the foot now. Is it time to think about a round of oral antibiotics?

I have been wrapping her in a towel, but haven't been covering her head. Had just been talking to her. This morning she was feisty but may have been because my husband was standing over us as well, dogs were barking outside the door, and may just have freaked her out (would preferred less "traffic" myself right then). Tomorrow her head gets covered.

As for antibiotics, I assume the only way to get them is through a vet, and a office visit is simply not an option given the cost vs. price of the duck - have to be practical - even if my heart says otherwise.

Husband thought it looked much better than on Sunday, so maybe I just am too much of a worry wort and need to just give it time.

Will see how she does in the morning. She's happy and eating - just had a handful of peas - drinking well, laying eggs. Getting impatient with being locked up - she must miss her buddies - and the big-old-hairy-human talking to her, just isn't the same (my quack isn't great - LOL!) Ciscoe misses her (they are "his" girls), because he keeps attacking my pant leg when I go out to the the others out....doesn't want me to touch any of them. Or he comes after me.

staph infection I know is everywhere and now bumblefoot now makes sense to me. In the hospital IV abx or oral abx work best against staph but Im sure it depends upon the strain. for persons that lost birds to staph they likely had a strain that was resistant or was simply not enough to rid the staph. Yes if staph is untreated it will kill and will likely not be fought off without medical tx. I will watch for that and go over my duck yard again more carefully. thanks
