BYC Café

Good morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.

We have another warm sunny day up on deck. I think I'll take the girls to a state park on the other side of the river today.

I think I only delayed the inevitable with Fabio. He just isn't himself. He's talking and occasionally crowing but, just slow. I'll check his crop tonight to see if he's eating. I also watched him attempt to herd one of his daughters and he didn't really get his shoulder down at all.

One of my favorite hens died sometime last night. I found her stretched out under the roost. I bawled like a baby. I feel gutted.

I wrapped her in plastic bags and put her in the freezer. I cannot just throw her away or burn her or leave her to be ravaged by a raccoon. I'll bury her in the garden when the ground thaws.

She seemed totally fine yesterday. I petted her when I took them all chickie snack. She wasn't even two years old. I couldn't face doing a necropsy.

They don't free range, and I have a roof over the run. If it's AI, then I am probably the vector.

Fly high and free, my beautiful Sunny! You will be missed.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is surprising how attached you can get to a chicken. And they have such short lives. It has taught me to be more accepting of the life/death cycle. It literally helped me cope with losing Dave. You clearly cared for Sunny. Is she your first loss?

You would know by now if it was HPAI.

Good evening Café!

It is already 18:00 here in Germany and not yet dark outside, yayyy!

Another sunny but a little colder day is coming to its end and I love the atmosphere of eager anticipation this time of year.

Saw three ladybugs today and several brimstone butterflies and bumble bees yesterday.
And walking the dogs I found a big anthill: the red forest ants were in full swing already, they swarmed the ground like a tsunami.
😊

I am sorry you lost your favourite hen @Sally PB . Try to think that this way she at least did not have to suffer. :hugs
