So my cousin just called me. They have been running tests on her 8 month old boy since birth trying to figure out what he is allergic to, finally figured out he is deathly allergic to penicillin. So allergic that when his mother ate antibiotic treated meat he was getting sick from her milk.

She cannot raise chickens where she lives so it looks like I am going to do more chickens then I had planned. Looks like a great excuse anyway :D

Your beef herd is already antibiotic free isn't it? I feel sorry for that young man and his family, the trouble they will have finding food safe for him. :hugs

Yes and I told her we happily give her the family discount for beef, and it was my hope to start raising a pig next year. She is a good friend so I will happily find a way to make it work for both of us. Her first son is deathly allergic to peanuts so she has already gotten into the habit of being very mindful of what they eat, but this limits their food even further.

Here in CO along the Front Range, all of the grocery stores carry antibiotic free, natural and organic meat of all kinds, game included.
Expensive for the most part, but you can get it. I still prefer to raise our own and hunt, but at least there are options.

Here is a funny article. Thank goodness the bears have all left here or are behaving.....

I hope that you have good fences for that pig

I take it that you have a trusted butcher, who does give you the meat that is yours, and not what is next in line.
They can be so hard to find, and so busy.

Yes it is getting harder and harder. We recently lost our federally inspected butcher but we have one in a nearby town who is very good.
Long before me, when DH was a boy FIL kept pigs, we still have all the fencing, DH says we can keep them behind the barn.

One of the biggest issues we have found with butchers is it can be very hard to find one here that is sympathetic to Organic.
Finding organic meat is tricky too. It is here, in the larger chain supermarkets. But the only Whole Foods, or similar type stores are in Omaha and Lincoln, I have never been to any of them.

Scary day. Was going to Ned to help a friend move hay at 2:30. Saw a wildland fire and as we got closer, DS$ and I realized that it was where we were going. Drove back in partway to try and get my friend's horses out, she has no truck, but as we were getting closer the smoke started blowing across the area that we needed to get to. Took one look at the smoke and looked at my son and had to turn around. People were freaking out and then there were a whole lot of looky-loos driving in to the general area with their go pros, phones , etc. That fire was moving fast, like crazy fast. Finally got word from my friend, she and her daughter are okay. She had to ride her horses out with flames on both sides of the road. Her friend's horses are unknown, she just opened the gates for them....
Crazy scary. Those flames were high and up in the crown of the trees. My son is dealing with it fine, he is no stranger to crazy things happening, but he has a lot of school mates that live down there. All we can do is hope for the best. I bet we will be chatting about this one.

Wow! That is scary! Glad you're all okay, and hopefully the friend's friend's horses are okay as well. I don't get the crazy people that drive right into the danger! We've seen some pretty dangerous situations and get out of there quick, but some people just stand there and video tape the whole thing......not smart. Stay safe in any other fires to come! :)

Margie,

for you and DS$ and your friends & her friends.
I don't understand why people want to drive into a danger zone just to look-see
barnie.gif
, if they were coming to help with the fire that's one thing, but just to look

Hoping for the best for all of you guys
