Oh, it's just not really a thing here I guess. My gran used to work in the woolen-mill or the "tartan shop", and she said they used to get a lot of Americans coming in asking about their surnames, and they would look them up on the computer to find their tartan and then buy scarves and kilts and such.
I'm half english half scottish. With Irish, Czech and Spanish/Italian ancestors. (If I went back as far as my great grand parents.) But I just see myself as British. I only ask because Americans seem to care much more about their heritage than other nationalities. For instance, ask a german what they are and they'll say german, even if their grandparents were french. But a lot of Americans will say Irish-American or something similar, even if they've never even been to Ireland.

Oh and, this isn't me trying to be rude or anything. Celebrate your heritage all you want

that's what happens, when you create the world's greatest nation from a melding pot of people from other countries. lol

Americans don't forget their roots, and for sure don't forget they are American.

I'm a Texican American!

Really every country is a melting pot now, the UK especially. It's just interesting to me because that sort of stuff never really happens here.

Yep, bunny beat me to it. Most of our ancestors were poor or forced to leave, they could not go back. They just tried to keep their past as close as possible, and their descendants continue it because it is fun, there is almost always beer involved.

guess it's something you won't understand then.

Yup, I don't get bitter about it like some people do. The Irish seem to get pretty annoyed when the Americans celebrate St.Patricks day lol.

I think the only British holiday we celebrate, is 4th of July.

lol

I wonder what possible harm to the Irish, that Americans celebrate a day in a country not in Ireland?

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing - that's the great American way, right? I hear Cinco de Mayo is a much bigger deal in this country than in Mexico . . . .

Yes I don't understand it. The Irish that came here did so because they were starving and had no choice, they greatly missed and loved Ireland, and were treated very poorly for a very long time here. There are many Irish songs about the beautiful green isle, that they would never see again. When it finally became acceptable to be Irish most if the first generation settlers were gone, but their children had heard all the stories, and missed what they have never known. I know my Grandmother, a second generation, always missed Ireland, knew all the songs by heart, but she never got an opportunity to go.

Well, it's almost seen as a mocking, since a lot of Americans won't even know who Saint Patrick was, and will just see it as an excuse to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and dress up like a leprechaun.
