, it was the cross country phase, and many of the horses were covered with protective grease.

Sour, would that have been the Cross-country phase of the 3-day Event? That's a tough, tough discipline, but it is gaining popularity. Eventing supposedly began as a way to demonstrate the extensive training on military mounts; it consists of dressage, cross-country, and stadium jumping. Cross country is impressive to watch, for sure - those jumps don't fall apart like the ones in the stadium do, and they are big and scary, so it takes a pretty brave horse to even tackle the course. I didn't see it; did a lot of the horses look white on the fronts of their legs? That's something like petroleum jelly; the idea is that if a horse hits a fence, that will help it slide off instead of sticking to it and possibly flipping over.

Really? That's so interesting. Wonder what use dressage would have for that? And you are right about the jumps. They are almost impressive works of art themselves lol

Good Humpday Morning WVC:frow
Do your ducks have enough rain yet?
I think that DW's ducks have just about enough mud to be happy now.
thanks for starting the coffee.
Scott

Morning Scott. We actually haven't had all that much rain lately. At least everything dries out between showers. They sure love when I turn the water hose on them. They line up like soldiers and hold their chests out and try to drink the water. :)

DW still enjoying the ducks and you still hating them? They sure grow fast, huh?

Mornin'! Did someone say coffee?

Dressage shows the amount of control the rider has over the horse - shortening and lengthening strides, etc. It also demonstrates the horse's suppleness. To be good at dressage, a horse needs the balance of a dancer and a patient, willing mind. To tackle the cross country, a horse must be bold and very fit. It probably goes without saying that most top level eventing horses aren't really good at dressage; the riders mostly try to get through with the fewest blowups.

Morning! We had some rain up here, way more nasty out on the plains. The horse dentist comes today. It is a good thing I now only have three.......

but anyway, Shadow should have her teeth checked for sure. It actually isn't that bad of a deal. There is no trip charge, no charge for checking the horse, just 150 to 175 per horse if the teeth need to be done.
Time to cafe up!
