BYC Café

Ok I'm officially jealous, those are beautiful Sean. I'm pretty sure I would need a permit to raise them but I want! Are they kept separate except when breeding or can a pair live together?
I run 1 cockbird to 5 or 6 hens. You can run several cockbirds together as long as no females are anywhere near the vicinity of the males....even that's a toss up sometimes...ring necked pheasants are highly territorial and aggressive at times toward eachother.
In general, it's 1 cockbird per pen, unless you have an insanely huge pen.
ETA-
If you run only a pair, the hen will be harrassed relentlessly during breeding season and could lead to the death of the hen.

there's also quite a variation in every melanistic that I have ever hatched. The Blue color of these were from parent birds that were totally green, so :idunno
Here's some more color variants of the Green melanistics.

Some males may have a white ring or no ring or a incomplete ring around the neck.

You have stunning birds, Sean.

Good morning Cafe.
Job offers are coming in. I keep hearing that I have one but not from anyone that really counts. :idunno
I hate it when that happens...you need to find another job and have an offer from a company you really don't want to work at for various reasons.

A good late morning to the Café. Hit the ground running early this morning. Trained two dogs and mowed half the back yard, and now it's coffee time. Brewed a fresh pot - have at it. Ball game last night - good game - boys lost 3/2. The other pitcher was slightly better, but both teams played well. Two more games tonight.

Gorgeous birds, Sean. I had some melanistic ringnecks as a kid, but not that beautiful. Can you post pictures of some of the hens ? Mine were a uniform rich chocolate color.

Thanks, I might look into keeping them in the garden. I'll have to read up on them.

Did I mention that we had a site inspection at the beagle club by the group that helped preserve our grounds ? I knew it was going to be a new person, and I hate change of any sort. Well, it went very nicely. Princess asked , "How did things go?" I replied, "If I were young, single, and not in love with you her boyfriend would be in serious trouble." What a cute kid filled with the enthusiasm of youth and a love of the outdoors. I started her out in the swamp as a test, and she waded right into the fern jungle. "Wow, this is like a tropical rainforest." she said. Maybe not as knowledgeable as our last inspector, but she sure was easy on the eye. :p
