BYC Café

I keep telling myself I should cull the boys at hatch, but it seems so heartless. They keep hubby awake listening to them. They are hard to get homes for too. I am a sucker.
I fear I'm going to fall victim to this as well with Barb's boy(s). And they are also the first chicks hatched from my flock.

Yeah, it makes me sick. If I wanted to hang onto them until September I could get my price at Glen Allen swap. But I have lots of grow outs in breeds that interest me more, so I need the space.
Yep, I would rather just keep'em, than sell them for a 'song and a dance'...I could eat'em too but I think I would choke on them everytime I took a bite..."there goes a $10 bite"...can't see myself eating a $100 or $400 dollar bird! :D

Morning everyone!

Shad, I needed that last cup of coffee to wake up. A new pot has been made and it's ready for anyone that needs more caffeine!

Thanks @Mtn Margie and @room onthebroom. The chicks are too cute.
One of them is most certainly Fabio's kid. One of them likes to peck mom in the face. I went out to give them some fresh mash and there were blood spots in the food dish and all over the pine shavings. Mom had a teeny weeny piece of the tip of her comb nibbled off! I then watched the little offender DANGLE OFF HER BOTTOM EYELID!! She shook her head and it went flying off. I get being a good mom and not killing them but a smartly placed pop to the back of the head seems in order here! The little turd isn't even 24 hours old.

Guess we know what his name will be (if you plan on naming them). What a patient mom Barb is!

I feel weird and awkward jumping in after almost 50k replies, but can I come to the cafe? I used to be really active on BYP, then I took a break for a few years. Most of my old friends on here have moved on. I'm trying to find my new niche.
I'm Lacey.

Hi Lacey, welcome to the Cafe!

I'm sitting on the patio listening to the roosters crow...their little voices are cracking like teenage boys, so cute. I bet the neighbors are getting sick of it though...they're 14 weeks now. We're going to have to get serious about doing the deed soon, although I was hoping to wait a few more weeks to let them get a little bigger. I don't know though, they're fighting as boys do and won't let the littlest dood roost at night.

Are you talking about my favorite little dood? If so, he might need to put his gold chains on and give a shout out Vinnie & the mob to come straighten things out!

No, little dood hasn't crowed that I'm aware of. He's subordinate to the others but the 3 crowers are going first so he'll get his chance!

Yep, I read about the pecking chick.;)
I've given pairs away in the past but I couldn't sell any. You may have a different outlook.
What I do find interesting is once you've through the whole cycle and you've decided to eat what you can't cope with, it gives you a realistic idea of the true cost of the meat.
If you are like me and not prepared to support the chicken meat or egg producing industry the only realistic answer is to eat an awful lot less meat.

I don't cull at hatch unless a chick has issues...I agree it's heartless. I know someone who culls their fully feathered chicks that hatch just for that reason...they aren't naked necks

These boys will go to the freezer in a couple of weeks.

Morning! Hi Lacey! Welcome to the cafe.
Sour, I am glad the boys had a successful day out on the field, both 4 and 2 legged and also the girl dog, I am not leaving her out.
Thanks for the coffee! Gotta get on with the chores so have a wonderful day you All!

Hi Margie, hope you have a good day!
