The best thing to do is get everything ready and then start the process. You might quit before starting but eventually you will begin processing. It is not really that bad and connects you to your food in a way that is primal for humans
That is something I really want to do. I eat meat. I know lives were given so I could eat that meat. I need to be more connected to it.

I know that killing will be the hardest part. I set a goal to not buy store birds and it has taken me more than 2 years to reach this point. I had the same thoughts. I still haven't done it myself.
I need to get a really sharp knife.
My neighbor is a hunter. He does no contact killing. I wonder if this is going to be harder for him than he thinks it will be.

Maybe it gets easier after the first one or two Dobie?
It doesn't, at least not for me.
I've gone with the neck dislocation method in the end.
There are a number of reasons. The first is a lack of blood. The other reason that may seem strange is I hold the chicken while it dies. The reflex flapping is contained either under your arm, or between your legs depending on how you do it. I find this much more acceptable than having a headless chicken flapping about. Even in a cone they still flap.:(
I was shown how to do this many years ago on my uncles farm. Mr Young who dealt with the chickens on my uncles farm had a hood he slipped over the chickens head. This helps keep them calm while you get them in the right position.
