Sour, my deepest sympathies to your SIL.:hugs

lol I know, right! Light rig, all the sail area you can carry & fast!

We lived next to the sailing club when I was a kid [hence no wonder I started early] & the national *sharpie* championships got held in our bay one year. Not as fast as your skiff or your 49er but a cap on sail area for a 3 man crew & 3 wires so certainly an exciting boat to race.

The thing about Sydney summers is you can swelter all day but the temperature will plummet once the *southerly buster* comes through @ 30~35k, usually in the late afternoon. We had very light nor'easterly winds so everyone had stripped their rig right down & were carrying maximum sail area & their biggest kites. Then the southerly hit. Man! Those things blew apart like matchsticks! There were bits of boat all over the bay! It is quite something to see a mast explode when 3 big men are right out on their wires! It was extremely entertaining for those of us safely on dry land but super expensive for the sailors & the pick up boat was kept really busy for some time because there were masts & wires & sails all tangled together in the water. The Germans designed & built this one so it just goes to show: all sailors are quite mad.
Watching "Bondi Rescue," I've seen that southerly wind show up on a couple of episodes. I can just imagine the havoc it could create on a boat rigged for light wind. I'm sure it was very entertaining for anyone who didn't have to pay for it!

As for sailors being mad, I wholeheartedly agree. Hubby's sailing club holds their Indian Summer Regatta in October every year. A couple of years ago, the event was cancelled because of the approaching Hurricane Matthew. When one of the members was told of the cancellation, he said, "you guys want to cancel? But, we're finally getting some wind!":gig

Yeah, I've launched in winds I couldn't keep my boat upright in & been towed back & the only cruise I ever wanted to continue we came round Barrenjoey Point [north of Sydney Harbour] into a 30~35k southerly with storm clouds threatening & low visibility. It was lovely but dad decided 2 seasick crew, 1 under 10 & a gangly 12 year old didn't cut it in that weather & turned back. :( I was really all the crew he had as my mum & one of my brothers were too ill to do anything & my other brother was small for his age & rather impetuous!:lau He was right. It was the safest option but it would have been a grand sail.

You get Bondi Rescue? Really? A very over~rated beach but I can't believe they managed to sell that overseas!
YouTube and Netflix. There's a few programs from Down Under on Netflix; Outback Truckers, Towies, Aussie Gold Hunters, to name a few. With so many companies creating their own streaming services, Netflix is having to look around a bit to find programs to air.

And frankly, in a lot of drone shots of Bondi Beach, I find it hard to believe how many people are packed on that little patch of sand. I think you could fit Bondi, Tamarama, and Bronte (Tama and Bronte are nearby, smaller beaches also patrolled by the lifeguards on Bondi Rescue) between the Holiday Inn and the Shell Island Resort on the north end of Wrightsville Beach . . . minus the rocks, of course. I do not do crowds; it must take a special kind of crazy to work in conditions like that.

Well I don't know the beaches you mentioned. My main beef with Bondi [though they may have fixed it since it's been over 30 years since I lived in Sydney] is the sewerage pipe emptied out @ one end. And of course most of our beaches are excellent for surfboarding rather than swimming. Bondi is no exception. Plus the tourists are all mad. They think our beaches are like their dinky little beaches back home whereas the reality is most are really, really dangerous & the only reason most people can swim off them safely is our lifeguards. I see it all the time when I spend time with my mum who lives on the Sunshine coast which has more than it's fair share of tourist beaches & people paddle where you can see the rips. It's a wonder more people don't drown each year. :rant

Sorry to vent. It just irks me when people put others lives at risk being dumb! :(

What are these shows? Never'eardovanyovthem.

Outback Truckers, Towies, Aussie Gold Hunters,

"Reality" shows, the kind of thing one finds on cable channels.

Our beaches aren't nearly so much about surfing, though some do it here. With mostly sand out there, our rip currents can migrate around a lot; people who haven't a clue about how to read the waves get caught in them all the time. I think a lot of people fail to realize that sharks aren't the only hazards at the beach. This seems to have been a particularly bad year locally; in addition to a number of drownings, two people had necks broken (one a fatality) just from getting knocked down by waves.
