You're not ready to eat any of your chickens yet then DL?
Are Chip and Captain brothers?
I've got two brother cockerels crashing around here atm. Talk about hysterical and overexcited.:hmm The hens threw them out of the larger coop for Tribe 3 when mum (knock) moved back in. They are living with dad (Notch) atm.
No, I'm not ready to eat them. I think I better wait until I'm ready to intentionally set aside the males in a grow-out pen for eating. I tried not to but got attached to Sergeant. So I figured I'd give Chip a chance to have his own flock. He got lucky.
No, Chip and Captain were not brothers.
Chip was brothers with Sergeant. Sergeant I'm sure will have more breeding rights than Captain as Captain is not related to Fabio. But Sergeant will be going to a new flock when that flock matures more. The man that wants him has twelve 12-week old pullets. They are too young to be dealing with a 17 week old cockerel. The man will come to meet him later this week. So far, Sergeant has not attempted to mate any of the pullets, including his sister. Chip had him well cowed and Captain regularly ran the boys off just because he could.

Good morning, Cafe. We've got snow on the ground but the wood stove and the coffee are hot. Warm up and have a cup before you are off on today's adventures.
I think my day will be even better than yesterday. I slept all the way through the night in my bed without being propped up on pillows and didn't awaken myself with a single coughing fit!
Have a great day everyone!
It is nice to get over a cough!

After they are processed, they look more like chickens from the store.

They taste amazing too if that helps?

I bet they do and I'm very much wanting to try.
I know we can eventually produce enough of our own chickens to feed us for a year (Mr. Shad ;)). I would keep whatever pullets I wanted and sell off the rest. I'm just not ready. I want to be. But I know I'm not.
I have so much to do that I end up doing nothing. When I look back at what I accomplished before my father died, it amazes me to see how far I've fallen. DH's Alzheimer's doesn't help but that isn't his fault. So adding on to my stress by taking a life for the first time seems like a bad idea. I'd probably traumatize myself! I'd feel too bad for the chicken.

There is a lot going on!

Do try with some Cornish X then and if you cannot process them your self, look for a local poultry processor. We have one in Sacramento that has a minimum of 15 last time I heard

I have to dispute that. You work, you are a caretaker, and then there are your projects - I've seen some of the pictures - plus you maintain your picturesque home and yard. :bow Wait until you get old. :lau

Well, thank you Father George but you should have seen me then I guess. I mean I found, bought, designed, flipped, marketed and sold 5 houses in 5 years (and moved 5 times during this period) while working full time for 3 of them in addition to taking care of DH, the dogs and cat and myself. I'd like to get a fire lit under my butt but have failed miserably. And I really love to do these things but just don't.
