Around here people tend to be too lazy to return carts to the store. Not certain that a quarter will make any difference.

I need dog food and comfort food like chips. I need to go buy stuff for Thanksgiving. I'm making sweet potato pie, dutch apple pie, and apple pie.

I'm making mine Thanksgiving morning. Then bringing them to my parents because we do holidays at their house. I already put my request in for green bean casserole and corn bread stuffing!

Elk stew for dinner you all. The snow has arrived and is piling up fast. I think I would run around like a homeless person and take back all of the carts that I could snag. 4 = $1 and that equals coffee money!

You're talking to the 'kid' who pedaled his bike all over the countryside looking for soda bottles and cans with anywhere from 1 -5 cent return rebate. Then of course there was the first job shoveling chicken crap for 25 cents/hour. Lord that was a long, long time ago.

I wouldn't squawk about bringing my own bags. But paying to use a cart is nuts!

The quarter is just to rent the cart. It keeps the lazy people from leaving their carts in the parking lot.
At the Aldi I shop at people frequently leave a cart at the entrance for those who don't have a quarter. I have needed these in the past. I then pay it forward and leave the cart for the next person in need.
I also just use a heavy duty box from Aldi to carry out my groceries. Then recycle it when I get home.

A lot of people take the bottom of boxes that Aldi's displays products in. The idea of the 25cents is to get folks to return the cart to the store. My father used to look all over the parking lot to find abandoned ones and connect to another cart to get a quarter back.
My mother was always embarrassed and hollered at him. But he prevailed.

BTW we have Aldi and also Trader Joes. Find Trader Joes to be higher priced that other stores BUT, I just buy the products I can't find elsewhere.

What is a bargain is TJ's own line of greetings cards, I've amassed many of them. You won't find anything like them and just 99 cents each. The card isn't marked so people don't know you got away cheap. I just like that they are unique. The store has a display fixture for them but, also some at the register. I traipse all around to find ones I don't already have.
