I only commented because I used to hold chicks something like that and once when I had a chick at the vets the vet told me off for doing it.
She says, because the chick often struggles you apply more pressure with four fingers which are point sources of pressure without realising how much force you are applying.
Chicks bones haven't hardened and around the ribs and joints it's easy to place pressure on internal organs.
So, she showed me how it's done. She does most of her examination and treatment with the chicken standing on a table. When the chicken struggles, she lets it go and gently guides it back to where she wants it. After a while the chicken seems to realizes you're not trying to kill it and relaxes. I've watched her stitch chickens as they stood on the table, wash out a broken egg, examine eyes and ears...............
I've been doing what she told me for a few years now and mostly the chicks and adults behave.
I had no idea they were quite so fragile. I don't pick them up in that fashion, but I definitely apply more pressure when they are struggling. I have always tried to hold both wings against the body because it's a more even pressure all around. I only handle them if necessary, so that limits the handling. But, because you said that, I will pay more attention. :highfive:

We are staying home, we had that planned anyway. We'll just have a nice meal, watch some movies and relax (at least that's the plan) :)

Are you going somewhere for Thanksgiving Meg?
That sounds like a great idea! That's my kind of Thanksgiving.
We're headed over to my in laws, which is only about 15 miles away. And my husband's driving, so that's good for me :p Hauling cows home on Friday. Then I don't know what for the rest of the weekend! Need to find a project :)

Got a picture of this little darling yesterday. She seems unimpressed
