@FortCluck have you ever gone to Chincoteague, Va. ? Very laid back and still somewhat rustic - it's my all time favorite place to go. We started when the kids were small and go there every year for my birthday.
It's about 4 hours from where we live, but maybe I'll go sometime. Everyone has told us to go there because I love wild horses. It's just hard to get someone to feed and water the chickens and ducks for us while we are gone.

Mine too!!!! I went and stayed there for a week by myself. Took my bike and went to the beach before sunrise every morning to take pics.....LOVED IT. Always wanted to go back.

I recently lost my animal caretaker of 30 + years. She moved to Fla. Next week the Princess and I are going to a casino in Conn. First time for a new person. We'll only be 5 hours away if something goes wrong. Someone to care for the critters is always a concern. We went away for 3 weeks for our 50th anniversary, and I devested myself of my birds and spread the dogs out among 3 people.

How many dogs do you have or animals?

We have 16 chickens, but some of the chicks will not be here when we bring them to freezer camp. We have about 30 chicks that will be hatching any day now, a cat, four dogs, three lizards and a partridge in a pear tree 😂😂😂🙈🙈🙈

It isn't easy .....I will have that issue in CT and I have not had it here. I hope you and the Princess have a great time! :))

One evening my BIL and I went out to Assateague during a thunder storm. We went our separate ways and wandered. The experience was profound for me. I'm not certain why/how but the place really resonated with me. Go back. We went for 'pony penning' one time - an interesting event, but too many people for me. I love going in the off season when only bird watchers or hunters are there.

Yes I wanted to go ever since I read Misty as a young person but couldn't face the crowds. I went in May I think....you're right....I need to go again!!! I got the most amazing photos!:love
I did a lot of walking there too....it's a special place.

@FortCluck there are presently 11 dogs in the yard. I raise and compete with field trial beagles. One dog is a rescue that I probably will not keep, but have a line on a possible really good home for him. Others range in age from 9 mo to 9 years old. Our last golden died about 6 months ago. Probably no more house dogs for us as any pup we might get probably would outlive the two of us. @room onthebroom has stated that we should get one and she and her husband will drive from Ca. and rescue the dog if necessary. Daughter is also pushing for another dog. Princess is weakening - I stand steadfast.

Happy anniversary Sour and his Princess!

There are also breeds like this. The secret is not to buy from a US hatchery but to buy from the country of origin.
I suspect there would be quite a bit of difficulty importing birds from another country.

@DobieLover I think that I love you. :lau
Tsk, tsk and on your anniversary too! ;)

I understand for some a broody hen means less eggs and more hassle
For those of us who have no rooster having a broody hen is a bit more than fewer eggs and more hassle. It is unhealthy for the hen. A hen trying to hatch pine shavings doesn't behave like one trying to hatch eggs. I do not know this as a fact but there must be something about fertile and developing eggs that tells them it is OK to leave the nest once a day to eat, drink, poop. I've NEVER seen one of my broody girls leave their shavings voluntarily.

As I understand it, a hen on fertile eggs will park on them for about 3 days, then get up once a day to deal with their needs but will clamp back down for the last 3 days before the chicks hatch.

DH is already designing my new coop. :love He knows I need it. I am really so excited about it!!!
That is good because soon he'll have 8+ hours (plus commute time) to find something to occupy his time 5 days a week.

That's why when I decided to leave Ohio....I chose the CT tribe over the NC tribe
Sounds about right to me! I can deal with 70°F, 80°F gets uncomfortable unless I'm sitting in the shade with a breeze. Above that, to the 100°F plus is seriously uncomfortable.
