BYC Café

I think it will be a real boost for local growers, and the fracturing of global supply chains will wake people up to the incredible fragility of modern 'developed' economies. The reduction in pollution is already very obvious too, so mother nature may be another winner from all this.

Good morning, Cafe. Thanks for the coffee, Shad.

I wonder what the availability of seeds and starters will be when it comes time to planting season. May be a good time to invest in a pressure canner. I was wanting to do that anyway :)

Tonya, your stores are way worse than ours. I hope you can get some stuff this morning. My uncle in Alaska said their Costco is just as bad. He, unfortunately, does not have a strong supply of TP :p

The Princess has returned. Drugstore was not crowded at all. Costco appeared normal so she went in. Actually got toilet paper and some water. There was no chicken or pork. Beef was limited to some steaks, and she bought some. There was no eggs or milk, but the bakery was well stocked. Vegetable supply seemed to be normal. Maybe the insanity is subsiding ?

This time last year. So much snow! Haven't even had piles like that this year.

That's great news, Sour! Hopefully it is.

I did good this morning. Everyone else had the same idea and the place was packed 5 minutes after opening. I bought a lot of root veggies for two different soups I make in the crock pot. I already had the meat for them in the freezer. I'll still need my salad ingredients to be fresh. And the veggies for the frittatas. I think we'll be okay.

I plan to go to our local farm store for veggie seeds on my way home.

On a related note, some butthead was photographed in the parking lot near the Sam's Club this morning trying to sell toilet paper out of the back of his SUV for about 4x what he paid for it!!

Wow. People are ridiculous. Maybe someone will turn him in...or kick his ass. Maybe both. Opportunists.

Glad to hear you got what you were looking for. Are you planning on freezing some meals after you make them? Or do you already do that?

I'm so glad I'll be back working on Dad's house tomorrow.
If this virus thing keeps up you'll have your Dad's place done in no time.

Of course having mt. lions around you might be a reason to have an LGD!
I think "an LGD" is way too few if you are talking mountain lions!

I mail out 10G of dried starter flakes. I also send instructions for activating it:

To rehydrate, place about 10 grams (1/3 ounce) of the dehydrated starter flakes in a straight-sided jar and cover with the same weight in fresh water. Let stand for 10 minutes to soften, then stir to dissolve. Feed with one cup of flour and cup of warm (90°) water and repeat daily, discarding half of the starter, until the starter is back on its feet, bubbling and rising in its jar.
I made use of Ron's generosity and my failing was in being totally ignorant of sourdough starter. Now that I know how it works, what I made with his was ready to go on DAY TWO!!!!! BIG foamy in the container. But I dutifully tossed some and fed for days afterward, nearly killing it I guess. Finally got it back to working right.

I saw some people with their shirt pulled up over their mouth and face! As if that would do anything...
Like we all want THAT vision burned into our memories!!!

I'm expecting a higher than average murder rate in the coming months as people get to know who they live with.:p
the murders stats, well, lets see how it goes.:p
Especially with that bunch up at the main house.

Good morning Café. @Shadrach - murders, and perhaps births ?
True, not much to do if you are stuck at home for a couple of weeks or months. Doesn't the birth rate go up when there is a major power outage from storms?

Absolutely zero chance we will produce more offspring.
Especially at your advanced age (being only 9 months younger than me) anyway ;)

It's pine pollen season here. I've considered taking a Sharpie and writing "pollen allergy" across my forehead to try to stem the tide of panic should I sneeze when I'm in public.
I've had a post nasal drip cough for about 15 years. Use Aller-Flo (Costco Flonase, thanks Ron) daily but still cough some. I'm sure I'll scare more than a few people when whe (hopefully) head home tomorrow.

I've been watching with great interest the politicians here in Spain using the virus crisis to further their particular agendas which don't seem to have an awful lot to do with health care.
Very sad. Maybe there is a reason people don't hold politicians in high regard all that much.

There are so many people without reserves. Depending on how long this goes on, many with reserves will be plumb depleted. What's a person to do?
True, my understanding is that a vast majority of the US population doesn't have even $1,000 for an emergency. What happens to them when they are out of work for weeks?

Yes the nail on the middle finger both hands
That is going to severely decrease the effectiveness if you have to flip someone off!

I did hear him say that He was going to move the peak of corona virus out so that the health care system would get ready! That was pretty stupid IMHO
Actually that is what the lead health care people are hoping for - spread the contamination out over time so there isn't a big spike of everyone needing major medical help all at the same time. DW went to her RA doctor last Tuesday, he figures that everyone will be exposed to it in the next year.

How long is this hoarding going to last!
Until the stupid hoarders have a 5 year supply of everything. Then the stores will close because they don't have enough customers.

Hugs, DL. I am curious to see if people change their attitudes towards lots of things after this.
Sadly I doubt it, people have REALLY short memories.

You know, I am a really honest person but if I couldn't find toilet paper and was out of it (the only reason I'd be looking anyway), I would not feel even slightly bad about stealing some from a jerk like that.
