Krista, is this milo?

Editing to add - my folks collected things on their trip (including some really cool candy) and sent us a little box - that picture above was what was in it. I'm betting it tastes like what we have here called ovaltine? I will try it tomorrow. They also sent the kids a packet of Vegemite - lol. Well, the dogs enjoyed it.

Lol, that's it! THAT is Milo!

All Aussie kids grow up drinking milo. It's sort of like a Hot Chocolate drink. You add boiling water and milk and you're set.

Of course, you have to have your toast and vegemite on the side too

I believe the milo to which Krista is referencing is sorghum.

Hmmm. Sorghum? I'm not sure what sorghum is over there, but we feed sorghum to our cattle from time to time here! It's a grass which is toxic at low growth but once it reaches a certain height it is palatable to cattle.

Milo is definitely nicer! Milo is a malt type drink, which all Aussie kids love. Traditionally we would have it for breakfast with toast (and vegemite) when we are kids, but I still like a mug of it when I'm not well. It is very good for you and high in B Vitamins. And it tastes sort of chocolate-y.

It's delicious!

I love dairy cows

, especially the Jerseys and the Brown Swiss. They were my favorites when I worked at the University Dairy Farm to help pay for school. I was an AM milker for a year or so and then got moved over to the Maternity Ward, which was awesome.

We have Holsteins here - we milk bout 380 of them 3 times a day. Hubby and I also own 4 Jerseys - and they are lovely. My favourites by far.

So you used to milk hey? (*Krista reaches for the Job Application Forms...*)

We have soooo much trouble getting workers out here. No-one wants to get up at 3.30am to milk anymore! I do a lot of work with the cows, but I am not a milker. Like you, my interest is in the Springers (Maternity Ward) and the animal health side of things. Hubby (the Herd Manager) milks though.

(PS: Sorry for the delay in my replies everyone. I work a bit on the farm during the day and tend to catch up on the computer at night time.)

I'll be the guinea pig later on and report back how the Milo was. It can't be any worse than the vegemite. Sorry Krista..it's an acquired taste I think. :)

meanwhile I sit drinking my usual: coffee with coconut oil, cream and a dash of cinnamon. Can't beat it.

I think someone earlier asked what kind of dogs we have - short answer is that we're not 100% sure but think one is a JRT/corgi and the other is a fox terrier/mix. Both like to kill small animals so I know the terrier part is spot on. I'd love to do a DNA test on them!

Gotta run - busy day of work and my daughter is getting her braces today. Fun times. :)

I bet. I would pass the party-goers coming home on my way out to work. We would give each other the hairy-eyeball in an alien freak show!

Hey sourland!

Wow, I am in some cool company! I think newborn cattle are the prettiest ,most perfect animals right out of the womb.
Most animals have that pinched 'what just happened to me?' look, but calves have those lovely eyes and the most perfect snoot.

I had a few agriculture classes but I never ever got the answer that I need to this question: A female is a cow. A male is a bull. plural is cattle. However, what if there is one bovine way out in the field and you can not tell if it is male or female. What do you call it? Is it still a cattle? like sheep and fish are singular and plural?

And RATS!!! I love rats. I would have been that girl with a rat in her hood, but I never trusted people not to hurt my rat, so she was my inside pet.
I just hand raised two eastern wood rats, but I think because there were two of them, I was not as welcome company since they had each other.
I got the flu and after two weeks of neglecting to handle them as much as they needed, they got too skittish... I caught a terrible cold almost two weeks to the day of getting the flu... So, I was bummed about it, but I had my husband release them deep in the woods away from people.
I know they have been eaten by now...
Oh well. My heart was in the right place, and I gave them a shot.

This cafe' has some fun and interesting people.
Oh, and I always thought this emoticon

was me drinking my coffee in front of the computer.

...But cows are all female.
and a steer is still male- just not overly concerned about it.

I gave the rats a shot at life, but espresso would have worked!
I mean, in some instances life feels very dependent on coffee.
