BYC Café

Good morning Cafe. Thanks for the coffee, Sour. Good luck at the trial.

DHs hormone therapy for his prostate cancer drops his testosterone to near zero so the Dr. wants to monitor his bone density to make sure he doesn't develop osteoporosis.
He had an base line bone scan Monday. I got a call from the Urology office yesterday. He already has osteoporosis in his right hip (which he's been complaining about for years and an x-ray showed nothing) and osteopenia in his lumbar spine and left hip. Just one more thing to pile on him.
I started him on Ca with D when he got his first injection. He needs to walk more. The Dr. wants to start him on a drug that takes the Ca out of the blood and puts it in the bones. It's called Prolia. One of the rare side effects is osteonecrosis of the jaw. There are other unpleasant side effects and this stuff is injected and lasts 6 months so once its in there, you can't do anything about it.
After a lot of research this morning, I've decided to take a more natural approach and I've ordered various high quality (and expensive) Ca + D + K2, Mg & Sr supplements. I even got some for myself. He's going to go on more walks with me and at a more brisk pace and I'll work with him on some weight bearing exercises to help increase bone density.
I'm sure I'll piss off the doctor when I tell him "thanks, but no thanks" for the Prolia but tough. I'll want DH to have another bone scan at 6 months to see if what I'm doing has improved the bone density or at least slows the loss.
