BYC Café

Good morning Cafe and thanks for the coffee, HG.

The pullets and cockerel are starting to lose their baby voices. The cockerel, Acer, sounds a bit like a frog. He is the only one ATM that will eat his raisins from my hand. The prettiest sister, Dantela, is getting close. Of course, she has a hard time building up her courage when her brother zips in and takes her raisin.

I'm very surprised how soft these birds are. I've handled dozens of pullets/cockerels and I've never felt anything like this. It's almost like picking bunnies up off the boards. I wonder what that will mean for feather longevity or how well they will hold up to mating.

I'm hearing my pullets make noises that sound similar to the hens', sort of half way between "whoo" and "cooo."

One of the pullets might have sort of squatted... a little? when I stroked her back. She's the brave one of the bunch, but not the reddest comb/wattle one.

The reddest comb/wattle is the Jubilee Orpington, which is what it's supposed to be, and I think it is. The other two are probably blue Jersey Giants, and not Blue Australorps, which is what I thought I was getting. At 5 months, they are are as big as my Black Australorps are at 19 months, and the bottoms of their feet are yellow, not pink/white.

Sigh. I love them anyway.

They are JGs. Still supposed to be nice birds. But it might be a lot like feeding a Great Dane vs a Golden Retriever.

Good morning and thanks for the hot coffee! Shorts, no, because when it is warm enough, the bugs are out and I am working with saws or some such equipment.
NFC, we have had only dustings so far but that will change on Monday. DH finished up the coldframe that we will be putting in the greenhouse to see if we can get some of the cold hardy veggies to thrive over the snowtime. Fall radishes are the test dummies and maybe some spinach. Enjoy the day, CAFE!

Yep, the same here...if it's warm the mosquitos are in full attack mode!

We got our 1st snow about 2 weeks ago and ended up with around 10". The 2nd snow wasn't that bad, fortunately.

Good luck with your greenhouse and getting some cold weather veggies to do well for you Margie!
