BYC Café

Today I bought a Lodge brand enameled cast iron Dutch oven. Yay! Merry Christmas to me.

I also am starting my GF sourdough. Yay! The packet I bought is only about 1/2 teaspoon, so let's hope it works.

Since the garden is done (though I can always find something to do in it, until the ground is frozen), I need a "tinkering" project, and sourdough is just the right thing.

Lucky me, one of my co-workers has a girlfriend who is a PhD in parasitology that works at Cornell University as a professor. For those of you unfamiliar with Cornell it is an ivy league level school and their veterinary science division is top notch.
I asked him if she would consider analyzing a mixed fecal sample from my flock. She agreed. This is a result.

I started the flock on a 7-Day course of flubendazole last week that will be finished this Wednesday. I'll pull another sample on Thursday to see what it did to treat the worms species found on the slides.
I'm also considering starting a low-level infection treatment with Corid based on the coccidia results in the first slide.
Just out of interest did she say whether she thought that the low to moderate parasite loads were a normal feature in chickens?

Good morning Cafe.
Coffee is made. It's Illy Expresso ground (illy) today. I've run out of Lavazza.
On the busy side today. One sick hen to try and put right. One traumatised dog from the fireworks who wont go out. A couple of friends due to arrive from Scotland to meet plus all the usual stuff.
However, the sun keeps peeking out from behind the clouds. The temerature is bearable at around 12C. It's not raining yet so that's a nice day in the UK isn't it?

Morning Shad, there's always room for more coffee! Enjoy the day with your friends.

Good morning Cafe! Lucky to have two sources of coffee this morning it seems! Thanks 😊

A thick layer of frost on the ground today - I watched it grow just before sunrise as the temperatures dropped. It looks like it’s shaping up to be another lovely day!

Enjoy your nice day! We're looking at rain today and maybe snow tomorrow.
