I can't find a decent vet or doctor here.
I had my heart check a few days ago. New doctor yet again. All fine the tests indicated. The doctor prescribed me two medications which since my heart attack over five years ago I have done without.
I asked why he had prescribed these medications when for the past five years no other doctor had considered them necessary. Just a precaution is the answer I got. I haven't even picked the stuff up.
Looking for a new practice.

Good Morning Cafe! Thanks for the coffee DL!

I hear ya on the vets. They tend to be all about business and not service these days, which just doesn't work well for. Very hard to find a good younger vet (though some of the older ones aren't great either).

It is grey skies here, but they're fairly high so it doesn't feel too dark and gloomy. Nice above freezing temperatures, though certainly not warm yet.

This is why he's very reasonable and very competent. The new way of running vet practices is "get as much money out of the client as you can. That means push every vaccine the animal could possibly be given and every flea/tick/heartworm preventive and tell them it must be administered year round, even if it's sub-zero outside."
Yep, most of the "owned by the vet" practices have been sold to corporate vet "overseers". The staff at our clinic is the same as before but they are now VCA since Dr. Tony sold out and retired. He wasn't even that old, maybe mid 50's. I can see where is it difficult to be the vet AND the admin, too bad they can't just bring in someone to handle the business end instead of selling to a "bring in the money NOW" corporation.

I still turn down all vaccines except the state required rabies. There is no way our cats could contract any of the diseases they want to vaccinate for. The cats never go outside and there are no floor level screens where an infected cat could come nose to nose with our cats. Don't see any cats around the house anyway. And heartworm? So far it still gets cold enough even in the summer that the worm can't live in the mosquito host. I don't think there has ever been a case of heartworm here unless it is an animal that came from somewhere warmer or "snowbirds" with its owners somewhere else warmer.

Yesterday I watched Olivia and Amelia (the buff EE in front of Olivia above) scratching around on the far side of the pen enjoying the day.
This morning Olivia was standing on one of her feet when I went out to feed them then slowly lowered herself to the ground. I went over and stroked her back and she allowed this then stood up and was mildly open mouthed breathing. I left her thinking "I'll have to get a better look at her tonight".
When I walked out the door 30 minutes later to go to work, she was laying dead in front of the run with Annie standing near her. She had a great day yesterday and didn't seem to have suffered. She would have been 5 on the 29th. She was one of the originals and was a very sweet bird.

This is where I went yesterday. This vet is a Cornell grad, sharp as a tack and a hippy throwback who very clearly doesn't give a crap about being rich.
I'm disgusted with any business involving medical care having their number one focus being money instead of good health.

I'm sorry you lost her. I wonder if, like some girls I've lost at a relatively young age, she died of fatty liver disease. They all seemed fine then just dead. I still have 3 girls that will be 6 in June (lost one from that batch in February) and 4 that will be 8. I lost the last of my original 12 March last year, she would have been 10 last June and was still laying the prior summer.

I'd had problems with Olivia since she was a pullet. She had an egg break inside her once and I got her through that when she was about 2. I don't know what killed her. I'm just glad it was fast and she didn't appear to have suffered much.
