BYC Café

We got about 4" of rain. There are gullies in the driveway, and part of the (county) road might wash out; we'll see when the water goes down.

They canceled the storm/tornado warnings, thank goodness. We did lose power for about two hours, but that's no biggie.

The topography of my downhill garden is different now. I think most of the garlic and multiplier onions are still there. I'll go out tomorrow when it's dried out a bit.

Some of the really good compost I put on last fall has been washed away. But I have the chicken run and a compost bin to dig out, so I can replace most of it.
It's really irritating when the rain washes the topsoil away.:rant

And I raise a finger to NYSEG in your honor, DL!

The gravel place messed up our order and brought us crushed asphalt by mistake. That stuff is a bump up in grade, so we lucked out. We got it mostly spread out; the Falcon plow helped. (And DH got to play with it, which he likes to do.)

I need to go out tomorrow and rake a few spots a little smoother. I'm sure my back will be talking to me in the morning.

The coop is so unbelievably dusty. I'm at war with it. I am doing my annual cleanout this coming week (I'm taking it off to work on the master bathroom, pond, some garden prep and the coop). I am going to kick up my coop cleanout to bi-annually. I have come to loath and despise the PDZ. Every time I spread it back out after scooping there is a dust cloud. I want to go back to the coffee ground bedding. It had NO dust and worked great.
I was told last year that Tractor Supp would get it back in during chick days. Never happened.
Soooo, I started calling the Starbucks in the area two of them have started offering spent grounds to gardeners. I scored my first bag today and will try to get another one tomorrow when I do supply run. I have to dry it but I will need to burn fires each night for the rest of the week so I have a 9"x13" baking pan on the woodstove full of damp coffee grounds that are drying. I should be able to get three batches dried by morning. And the house smells DEVINE!

The power companies make it difficult to go off grid here and sell any excess back to the grid. At the same time more and more products come onto the market that need electricity to work.:rant
One would have thought that it was within everyones long term interest to use less energy and where possible, to generate ones own.

When I go to the chiropractor, I have a Starbucks that I stop at for coffee grounds. It is my "mother lode" Starbucks. I have gotten 8 bags there more than once, and at least 2 or 3 every time. I spread them around the blueberries and asparagus plants. I have to bury the filters, if there are any, so they don't blow around.

One would have thought, yes. But that requires thinking... Sigh.
