BYC Café

Good morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.

The rains have come. We had a light shower last night for which I was grateful. I built a small berm along the front edge of my front planting arrangement. Every time we would get torrential downpours the water would flow across the front of it about ankle deep and wash away all the mulch, and over the years, the soil over the roots of the trees.

Yesterday I got a small load of topsoil to cover the clay I used to build the berm and to feather it out and to cover the large patch of dead grass where the mulch pile was, spread seed and straw and gently tamped everything down.

I hope we don't get a torrential downpour in the next several days of rain or it will wash away my efforts.

I need a break in the action. When I get home tonight I'm just going to clear all the crap that has accumulated on my kitchen counters. Then go to bed early.
Have a great day Cafe. I'm off to work...

Good morning Cafe! Thanks for the coffee DL!

Another nice day here and things are finally drying out. My dahlias suffered a bit from the wet and cold weather - definitely more losses than normal, but it was a year in which I couldn't baby them along. Good for sorting out which will thrive in this climate and which will not!

I decided to bring my laptop (and its charger) home with me and finish working from home today after letting the dogs out.

I let Astrid out of the clink this morning, one day early, because I wanted Savannah to have Astrid's water bottle. I fully expected she'd be back on the nest and I'd have to toss her back into the clink. Imagine my surprise as I pulled into my driveway and I saw Astrid stroll out the run door to wander off to scratch in the grass. Looks like I cracked that nut.

I think Savannah as figured out her new nest site so I'll get her some hatching eggs from the farm around the corner and let her start tonight.

Good morning Cafè. Coffee is ready.

I did a test run with Savannah last night and pulled her off her nest and threw her outside with the flock. Unbelievably my half-blind girl, Remi, started stalking her because of her broody behavior so Savannah ran over to one of her triplets, Morgan. I have three hens in the flock that look extremely similar and they're all little buddies. All Morgan did was just look up at Remi and she turned around and left.

After the usual broody break behavior, Savannah went back into the coop and tried to get on her nest but the door to the ward was closed. She readily went in once I got it open for her. She is the fastest graft to the wet nest I've ever had.

She is now setting 7 eggs. Lucky 7. I need some luck so why not?

A few cool days, and then we get back to heat.

Tomorrow we're going to help a friend (start to) clear out his pole barn. We will be coming home with some of the stuff. For sure, two transfer cases for the Falcon plow we bought from him. We'll see what else he can palm off on us.

A few cool days,
...and cooler nights.
It's been wonderful!
Trying very hard not to think about the heat coming....
....except to get the shade cloth up and other coop windows open before it hits. Ladder work, uhg.
