BYC Café

Apparently they love corn on the cob- I've seen several stores offering cob holders for squirrels and even some that look like a picnic table. HA, like I would want to encourage them to hang around.

In US people get attacked and bit by them now and then. People feed them and when they don't keep it up squirrels get angry. Sometimes there are rabid ones.

When I was a kid, the girl across the street was feeding them - the squirrel climbed up her legs and she was screeching to high heaven. I bet she never did that again.

I NEVER did that after witnessing what happened to her.

YIKES. I wouldn't feed them either! We don't have rabies here though.

Your squirrels remind me of kangaroos. Not looks-wise, obviously.

But we have a HUGE population of 'roos in Australia, as you would know. In Summer, food in the bush is not plentiful enough to sustain the ever-growing populations of 'roos.

I have heard of them watching people near convenience stores, and once they figured out that the people were carrying food out to their cars, they started attacking them and stealing their groceries.

The Government did a big cull of the excess 'roos after that started happening, to reduce the population density of the 'roos. You should have hard the hoo-ha about THAT. It did not go down well with The People and there were protests everywhere about the culls being cruel.

Personally, after seeing the starving 'roos in an environment which could not sustain them, I tend to think it was the lesser of two evils.

Morning all,

My day today is a fairly quiet one. Laundry, housework, a grocery trip and I'm going to visit our town library and see what's on offer. You never know, maybe they have courses or clubs I can join where I can make some friends. It's hard being in a town where you don't know a soul. I think a lot of people make friends through their kids being at school, and I don't have that option. Anyway, I'll see what the day brings.

Have a lovely day everyone!

It is hard to meet people/make friends when you're new. I found this to be especially true a couple years ago when we moved from a small south FL town to rural north FL. People around here (scattered as they are) have been here forever; we don't have kids and I don't work outside the house. Finally met a few selling eggs but don't really know them. If it weren't for the friends I've made here, it would be a pretty solitary way of living. I'm blessed that DH and I are the best of friends though!

Prostar - I'm interested. What sort of foods do squirrels find irresistible? Like, what would you put in the trap to entice them? Is it true, like in the cartoons, that they like nuts?

Krista

After having squirrels raid the garden multiple times and try to get into the coop and animal food, we finally had to resort to trapping them and dispatching. We've been loading our traps with sunflowers and cracked corn. In the one year we've been doing this, we've cut the squirrel population down by 28.

Here's a good squirrel video...mom, can we keep him?

I bet that kid never picked up another squirrel, lol.

Eeeeewwww.

Took out the garbage this morning. Course with all the rain and stuff there's some garbage soup but...the smell. Phew! Dump the can into the dumpster and...maggots.
Maggots everywhere.

I guess I'll go bang out the can outside the girl's run and see if they want some in a bit. But eewwwwwww.

(Course there were some random chicken bones from our bbq this weekend and a squirrel in there too)
